In March, the Keahiakahoe Canoe Club, with support from the <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant College Program<\/a> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">(Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant) and <span aria-label=\"Kuaaina\">Kua&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> Ulu <span aria-label=\"Auamo\">&#699;Auamo<\/span> (<a href=\"http:\/\/kuahawaii.org\/\"><abbr>KUA<\/abbr><\/a>) came together to support the creation of a native limu mural on Sand Island.<\/p>\n<p>Kamehameha Schools\u2019 Kap&#257;lama mural club students, led by seniors Annamarie Ellazar and Mailelauhulali Hoe, designed and painted the mural with themes of &ldquo;togetherness&rdquo; and &ldquo;place&rdquo; in mind, with an inherent Native Hawaiian perspective. By using the Sand Island\u2019s traditional name, artists paid homage to the roots of this significant place.<\/p>\n<p>The diverse array of native limu and the club\u2019s koa canoe, <span aria-label=\"Keolahouomaehaapiti,\">Keolahouomaeha&#699;apiti,<\/span> appear to share nothing in common, but both are tethered to this place where many communities come together to paddle, swim and celebrate. <span aria-label=\"Keolahouomaehaapiti\">Keolahouomaeha&#699;apiti<\/span> is depicted riding ancient waves, buoyed above the native fauna of the former reef, with limu woven throughout the design.<\/p>\n<p>Limu is significant to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> with strong historic, cultural ties to Native Hawaiians because of its importance as a food source and bioindicator of environmental health, often bringing people together, making limu a transcendent symbol of unity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_161963\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-161963\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/manoa-sea-grant-sand-island-mural-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"students painting mural\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-161963\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/manoa-sea-grant-sand-island-mural-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/manoa-sea-grant-sand-island-mural-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/manoa-sea-grant-sand-island-mural.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-161963\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo credit: Boz Schurr, Kamehameha Schools)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;As we strengthen the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa as a Native Hawaiian place of learning, this mural in collaboration with the Kamehameha mural club, <abbr>KUA<\/abbr> and Keahahiakahoe is just one of the many ways our programs can creatively engage and partner with local community members and elevate the incredible talents of our young leaders, all to strengthen our connection to one another and place,&rdquo;
