  {"id":162750,"date":"2022-08-02T12:49:15","date_gmt":"2022-08-02T22:49:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=162750"},"modified":"2022-08-02T12:53:17","modified_gmt":"2022-08-02T22:53:17","slug":"sea-grant-coastal-erosion-trip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/08\/02\/sea-grant-coastal-erosion-trip\/","title":{"rendered":"Sea-level rise impacts highlighted with expert at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Sea Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-sea-grant-coastal-erosion-5.jpg\" alt=\"people standing on the beach\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-162772 type:primaryImage\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-sea-grant-coastal-erosion-5.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-sea-grant-coastal-erosion-5-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-sea-grant-coastal-erosion-5-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To address the impacts of climate change on <span aria-label=\"Oahu,\">O&#699;ahu,<\/span> the <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant College Program<\/a> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">(Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant) is highlighting efforts its experts are conducting around the island to tackle issues surrounding sea-level rise, coastal erosion and inland flooding.<\/p>\n<p>On a field trip to <span aria-label=\"Oahu\u2019s\">O&#699;ahu\u2019s<\/span> North Shore and M&#257;punapuna organized by <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant on July 29, <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> students and visiting fellows witnessed the impacts of climate change in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii.\">Hawai&#699;i.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-sea-grant-coastal-erosion-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"houses with shore hardening tarps\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-162773\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-sea-grant-coastal-erosion-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-sea-grant-coastal-erosion-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-sea-grant-coastal-erosion.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Shellie Habel<\/strong>, a coastal geologist and extension faculty at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant, led and organized the site visit and extended opportunities for the five participants to learn more about coastal resilience and planning activities.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u2019s really important that these participants see present day impacts of sea-level rise because they will be contributing to environmental management as part of their future careers,&rdquo; said Habel. &ldquo;Today we observed the manifestation of impacts in the form of erosion and drainage related inland flooding, which are often not intuitively associated with sea-level rise.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Participants saw firsthand the coastal erosion that is taking place at Rocky Point. Homeowners are using shoreline hardening measures to help save their homes, but Habel said that was only a short-term solution to what will become a dire problem as climate change and sea-level rise continue in the future.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-sea-grant-coastal-erosion-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people standing on the beach talking\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-162770\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-sea-grant-coastal-erosion-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-sea-grant-coastal-erosion-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-sea-grant-coastal-erosion-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Visiting the North Shore and M&#257;punapuna reminded me of the extremely difficult challenges that <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> faces as sea-level rise and blue sky flooding gets more frequent and harder to manage,&rdquo; said <strong>Cuong Tran<\/strong>, a graduate student in <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s urban and regional planning program in the <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a> and 2022 Grau Fellow. &ldquo;To adapt to the climate crisis, we all must work together and be able to make tough decisions. She challenged them to brainstorm innovative solutions as they become the next generation of environmental managers who will continue to address the challenges of climate change.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-sea-grant-coastal-erosion-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people standing on the beach\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-162769\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-sea-grant-coastal-erosion-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-sea-grant-coastal-erosion-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-sea-grant-coastal-erosion-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&#8217;m extremely grateful to Shellie for taking time to bring us to see the endangered site on the North Shore&#8212;seeing these situations in person evokes such a visceral response that inspires me to continue in this field (environmental policy\/administration) and to foster the relationships that need to exist in order for us to protect coastlines and coastal communities,&rdquo; said Sarah Chin, a visiting 2022 Rappa Fellow from Columbia University.<\/p>\n<p>The field trip included a quick stop through <span aria-label=\"Oahu\u2019s\">O&#699;ahu\u2019s<\/span> industrial district in M&#257;punapuna to see the effects of inland flooding in low-lying areas. King tides and higher water levels are becoming more frequent and provide a snapshot of the future and what could eventually become commonplace.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is crazy to see the erosion on the North Shore and the inland flooding in M&#257;punapuna because those sites are indicators of how sea-level rise will impact the island,&rdquo; said <strong>Joel Burgess<\/strong>, a third year law student at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.hawaii.edu\/\">William S.
