At 12:08 p.m. <abbr title=\"Hawaii standard time\">HST<\/abbr> on August 11, 2022, a 44-foot <abbr title=\"National Aeronautics and Space Administration\">NASA<\/abbr> sounding rocket blasted off from Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia carrying a scientific experiment designed by University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Community College students about 91 miles into space.<\/p>\n<p>Project Imua is a joint faculty-student enterprise of multiple <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Community College campuses in affiliation with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spacegrant.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Space Grant Consortium<\/a> that provides students with real-world, project-based learning opportunities. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/a> team designed a camera system and inertial measurement unit devices to monitor the sublimation rocket\u2019s motion.<\/p>\n<p>Project leader <strong>Jared Estrada<\/strong>, a Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> student, said, &ldquo;The launch was an amazing spectacle that served as a crowning achievement for the scientific endeavors of Project Imua.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Project Imua provided hands-on rocketry experience both in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and at <abbr>NASA<\/abbr>. In June, two students traveled to the Wallops facility to run final tests on their Project Imua payload.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Related <em><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> News<\/em> story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/06\/26\/payload-for-space-launch-tested-at-nasa-facility\/\">Payload for space launch tested at <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> facility<\/a>, June 26, 2022<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A few days prior to the launch, the rest of the Project Imua team was in Virginia for fine tuning and final integration.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The hands-on, authentic research conducted by our <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Community College students challenges them to set their sights on lofty goals, while building the demanding skills required in high-tech, <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> careers,&rdquo; said Project Manager <strong>Joe Ciotti<\/strong>, a Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> professor. &ldquo;They\u2019ve learned through their intense year-long collaboration with <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> engineers that, when it comes to dreams and achievements, the sky\u2019s the limit.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/project-imua\/\">More Project Imua stories<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After reaching its peak, the payload carrying the experiments descended by parachute and landed in the Atlantic Ocean, off the Virginia coast.
