They also provided simultaneous translation for the more than 200 Chinese attendees at the China-American Clean Energy Forum.<\/p>\n<h2><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> student and instructor interpret for foreign leaders<\/h2>\n<p>University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa graduate student Katherine Porras will serve as a Spanish-English escort interpreter for one of the first ladies In Honolulu for <abbr title=\"Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation\">APEC<\/abbr> Leader&#8217;s Week while her instructor is escort interpreter for the president of the member economy.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re not allowed to say who they&#8217;ll be accompanying until after the meetings.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1649\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1649\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/porras.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1649\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1649\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Katherine Porras<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Porras, an <abbr>MA<\/abbr> candidate in <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.hawaii.edu\/~uhmdance\/graduate\/ma_ethnology.htm\">dance ethnology<\/a>, was John Nealon&#8217;s student in the Center for Interpretation and Translation Studies 2011 Summer Intensive Interpreter Training program. It was the first time Spanish-English was offered in the six-week training program covering simultaneous and consecutive interpreting. The center has offered the training in Korean, Japanese and Mandarin every second year since 1999.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;International forums held in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, such as the <abbr>APEC<\/abbr> meetings, use international languages. That spells jobs for trained language interpreters, and our students have the skills to compete with experienced mainland interpreters for those jobs,&rdquo; said Suzanne Zeng, director of the Center for Interpretation and Translation Studies.<\/p>\n<p>Senior journalism student, Courtney Viernes, was hired by <abbr>NBC<\/abbr> News to help in its coverage of <abbr>APEC<\/abbr>, noted Zeng. &ldquo;These are opportunities for our students to get real world experience.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Center teachers, students and alumni in Korean, Chinese and Spanish were used to interpret at the pre-<abbr>APEC<\/abbr> International Drug Trafficking Forum hosted by the Honolulu Department of the Prosecuting Attorney and the International Business Leaders event sponsored by the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I love to see local jobs go to local folk, especially those who are from <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>.
