Established in 1972, the center is recognized as the oldest and largest in the U.S. and Canada, serving as an educational, research and cultural hub. <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s geographic location has propelled the center to play a key role in bringing together scholars and intellectual leaders.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_165527\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-165527\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/manoa-center-for-korean-studies-ground-breaking-1972-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"groundbreaking ceremony\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-165527\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/manoa-center-for-korean-studies-ground-breaking-1972-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/manoa-center-for-korean-studies-ground-breaking-1972-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/manoa-center-for-korean-studies-ground-breaking-1972.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-165527\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr title=\"Center for Korean Studies\">CKS<\/abbr> building groundbreaking in 1974<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;The Center for Korean Studies aspires to become a new icon that leads the changes in the modern world,&rdquo; said <strong>Tae-Ung Baik<\/strong>, director at <abbr>CKS<\/abbr>. &ldquo;Along with the global spread of Hallyu, the Korean Wave, and popular culture in the international community, the center will continue its efforts to serve as a hub for the Korean studies networks fostering international cooperation, academic exchanges, and economic and social developments across the borders.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Located on the Diamond Head end of the <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa campus, the center\u2019s distinctive stonework, painting and dark green glazed ceramic tiles set an authentic ambiance. The main building is modeled after <em>Kunj&#335;ngj&#335;n<\/em>, a traditional Korean palace throne hall and was completed in December 1979.<\/p>\n<p>Today, <abbr>CKS<\/abbr> is made up of more than 40 affiliate members from <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> in a variety of fields such as language, history, literature, economics, anthropology, media broadcasting, music, architecture, and law. Within two years about 7,400 immigrated to the islands, many eager to work on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s plantations and send their earnings back home.<\/p>\n<p>In 1954, <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa responded to a collective push to strengthen Korean language studies and launched its very first course on campus.
