Otsuji<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/\">Leeward Community College<\/a> Assistant Professor <strong>Ann Inoshita<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr><\/a> Associate Professor <strong>Derek N. Otsuji<\/strong> have been named this year\u2019s recipients of the Elliot Cades Awards for Literature, the most prestigious literary honor in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>. Inoshita\u2019s award is for an established author and Otsuji\u2019s is for an emerging author.<\/p>\n<h2>Ann Inoshita<\/h2>\n<p>Inoshita teaches English at Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, earned a master\u2019s degree from the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa, and has been an active member of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s writing community. She is the author of <em>M\u0101noa Stream<\/em>, an acclaimed 2007 book of poems, and has been published in collections such as Random House\u2019s <em>Reel Verse<\/em> (2019) that include many nationally-known poets.<\/p>\n<p>Her pidgin poem &ldquo;Japan Trip&rdquo; was published this year in <em>They Rise Like a Wave: An Anthology of Asian American Women Poets<\/em>. Inoshita has also participated with other poets in several <em>renshi<\/em> (a form of collaborative poetry) projects, including <em>No Choice but to Follow<\/em> and <em>What We Must Remember<\/em>, in which each writer posts a poem constrained by the last line of the preceding poet\u2019s poem.<\/p>\n<p>Her works have been published in <em>Bamboo Ridge<\/em>, <em>Journal of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Literature and Arts<\/em>, and <em><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Pacific Review<\/em>. It is an honor to receive this award,&rdquo; Inoshita said.<\/p>\n<p>She has also participated with other poets in several renshi (a form of collaborative poetry) projects, including No Choice but to Follow and What We Must Remember with poets Juliet S. Otsuji<\/h2>\n<p>Born on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, Otsuji teaches English at Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and is the author of <em>The Kitchen of Small Hours<\/em>, a volume of poetry selected by Brian Turner as one of two winners in the Crab Orchard Poetry Series competition that was published last year by Southern Illinois University Press. He is a 2019 Tennessee Williams Scholar (Sewanee Writers\u2019 Conference) and has received awards from <em>Bread Loaf<\/em> and the <em>Kenyon Review<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>His poems are widely published in local, national and international journals, including <em>32 Poems, <\/em><em>Bamboo Ridge, <\/em><em>The Beloit Poetry<\/em> Journal, <em>Bennington Review<\/em>, <em>Cincinnati Review<\/em>, <em>Crazyhorse<\/em>, <em>Pleiades<\/em>, <em>Rattle<\/em>, <em>The Southern Review<\/em> and <em>The Threepenny Review<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>He won first place in the Eisteddfod Crown Competition, and studied writing with the late Welsh poet Leslie Norris.<\/p>\n<h2>More about the Cades awards<\/h2>\n<p>The Cades awards have been given annually since 1988. They were created by Charlotte and J. Russell Cades in memory of Elliot, a teacher and lover of literature. The awards include a cash prize for the winners.
