However, I am also excited to share our perspective and values as a representative of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>,&rdquo; Van Fossen said. &ldquo;For our local community, my hope is that we can provide opportunities to connect them with researchers, cultural practitioners and conservation groups, and learn from them what climate change means for the existence of our critically endangered plants, and what the ordinary citizen can do about it.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Expanding awareness of endangered plants<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_166427\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-166427\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/manoa-lyon-arboretum-botanic-garden-collaboration-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"various green plants\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-166427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/manoa-lyon-arboretum-botanic-garden-collaboration-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/manoa-lyon-arboretum-botanic-garden-collaboration-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/manoa-lyon-arboretum-botanic-garden-collaboration.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-166427\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo credit: Raedelle Van Fossen\/Lyon Arboretum)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Participants in the program will become familiar with the state\u2019s endangered endemic plants, such as <span aria-label=\"mao\">ma&#699;o<\/span> hau hele (native yellow hibiscus) and n\u0101n\u016b (forest gardenia), and threats to their survival caused by climate change. They will also have opportunities to participate in climate change mitigation activities, informed by Indigenous Hawaiian practices.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Lyon Arboretum\u2019s participation in the <abbr>PLACCE<\/abbr> program supports the work of Lyon\u2019s Hawaiian Rare Plant Program, an ex-situ (off-site) program dedicated to germplasm (genetic material) storage of native Hawaiian plants, by helping to shed light on the impacts of climate change and the plight of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s native plants,&rdquo; said <strong>Nellie Sugii<\/strong>, Lyon Arboretum acting director and Hawaiian Rare Plant Program manager. &ldquo;It is increasingly necessary to have educational conservation outreach efforts due to the accelerating rate of environmental pressures that result in habitat degradation and\/or loss.
