The <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Office of Campus Operations and Facilities will begin replacing 150 lighting poles, fixtures and foundations on East-West Road and Maile Way in October in a project expected to take about 18 months. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This project will not only make our campus safer with better lighting, it is another step toward <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>\u2019s goal of being net-zero (producing as much energy from renewable sources as consumed) by 2035,&rdquo; said <strong>Jan Gouveia<\/strong>, <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> vice president for administration. &ldquo;In the last 11 years, we have saved more than 50 million kilowatt-hours (<abbr>KWh<\/abbr>) through projects like these and by redesigning and reworking of systems.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_166399\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-166399\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/manoa-facilities-ching-field-road-led-lights-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"ching service road at night\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-166399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/manoa-facilities-ching-field-road-led-lights-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/manoa-facilities-ching-field-road-led-lights-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/manoa-facilities-ching-field-road-led-lights.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-166399\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Upgraded <abbr>LED<\/abbr> light fixtures on Ching Field Service Road.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The new <abbr>LED<\/abbr> lighting system will use 64&#37; less energy, with an estimated annual energy consumption of 29,346kWh compared to 82,346kWh with the current High-Intensity Discharge light fixtures. Additionally, <abbr>LED<\/abbr>s have a longer lifespan, and require less maintenance and fewer replacements.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/sustainability\/efficiency\/exterior-lighting-for-parking-lots-2016\/\">similar exterior lighting upgrades over the last several years<\/a>, which yielded better lighting and energy savings of millions of kilowatt hours annually. Their motion-activated illumination controls also help to increase safety and save energy at the same time. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Reducing our energy use has helped save the university millions of kilowatt-hours annually, and makes for a more sustainable M\u0101noa campus in the future,&rdquo; said <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa project manager <strong>Daren Lui<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Construction is expected to begin in late October 2022 and will affect pedestrian and vehicular access along East-West Road and Maile Way roadways.
