The experience offered students a glimpse into the realm of archival research, and allowed them to gain newfound knowledge about traditional book culture.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This experience was very special,&rdquo; said <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa student <strong>Monique DeLara<\/strong>. &ldquo;Before this semester, I didn\u2019t really have an appreciation for objects even a hundred years old. Witnessing how much care went into handling these books and being able to look through them myself helped me put into perspective how even everyday objects like letters, a journal or textbook are an important peek into how things were done then compared to today or another several centuries (or even decades!) into the future.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_166453\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-166453\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/manoa-call-japanese-artifacts-hamilton-kujiratori-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"page from a manuscript with Japanese script\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-166453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/manoa-call-japanese-artifacts-hamilton-kujiratori-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/manoa-call-japanese-artifacts-hamilton-kujiratori-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/manoa-call-japanese-artifacts-hamilton-kujiratori.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-166453\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Kujiratori<\/em> (&ldquo;Whaling&rdquo;) manuscripts from the Sakamaki\/Hawley Collection<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Students took a &ldquo;speed-dating&rdquo; approach in engaging with the ancient artifacts. Each student viewed a different object for three to five minutes on a cycle, taking notes and observing similarities and differences. When writing down observations, students focused on relevant features, such as the item\u2019s format (book-binding type, print\/manuscript), paper quality (color and thickness), writing style and text-image relationship.
