The cooperative venture of more than 40 academic libraries in 10 countries around the Pacific Rim aims to improve access to scholarly research materials in their libraries for the region. For the first time since its inception in 1997, the <abbr>PRRLA<\/abbr> meeting will be fully online in eight time zones across Asia, Oceania and North America. <\/p>\n<h2><span aria-label=\"Hooulu\">Ho&#699;oulu<\/span> L\u0101hui<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>As our libraries rebalance our practices from the COVID-19 pandemic, <span aria-label=\"Hooulu\">Ho&#699;oulu<\/span> L\u0101hui serves as a metaphor to explore how <abbr>PRRLA<\/abbr> institutions adapted to meet patrons needs&#8230;<br \/>&#8212;Monica Ghosh<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The theme of the meeting is inspired by the 1874 motto, <span aria-label=\"Hooulu\">Ho&#699;oulu<\/span> L\u0101hui of King David Kal\u0101kaua, aimed to strengthen the Hawaiian Kingdom by increasing Hawaiians after waves of epidemics, revitalizing cultural practices, furthering diplomatic relations with nations around the world, and forging regional alliances with the Pacific and Asia. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As our libraries rebalance our practices from the COVID-19 pandemic, <span aria-label=\"Hooulu\">Ho&#699;oulu<\/span> L\u0101hui serves as a metaphor to explore how <abbr>PRRLA<\/abbr> institutions adapted to meet patrons needs and plans\/programs to build culturally driven spaces, resources and services to enrich our libraries,&rdquo; said Public Services Division Head &#38; South Asia Studies Librarian <strong>Monica Ghosh<\/strong>, who serves as program committee chair for <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. &ldquo;This motto also asks us to reflect on how we are integrating Indigenous and cultural knowledge&#8212;occurring simultaneously in academia&#8212;to deepen and inform how our libraries develop strategies to best care for our places and people, and advance solutions to make our world and work sustainable now and for the future.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<h2>Program focus on place<\/h2>\n<p>The online program includes a welcome from <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Host and University Librarian, <strong>Clem Guthro<\/strong>; a message from the Secretariat and University Librarian, Gwenda Thomas at the University of Melbourne; and will culminate with a keynote address by <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Native Hawaiian Affairs Program Officer <strong>Kaiwipunikauikaw\u0113kiu Punihei Lipe<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_166740\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-166740\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/manoa-hamilton-library-aerial-300x169.jpeg\" alt=\"hamilton library\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-166740\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/manoa-hamilton-library-aerial-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/manoa-hamilton-library-aerial-130x73.jpeg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/manoa-hamilton-library-aerial.jpeg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-166740\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hamilton Library on the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa campus (Photo credit: Ross Togashi)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The moderators and presenters are a diverse group of people who represent the range of member libraries in Australia, Canada, China, Korea, Singapore and the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr><\/p>\n<p>Ghosh, and co-chairs <strong>Dongyun Ni<\/strong> and <strong>Kapena Shim<\/strong> have collaborated with colleagues across regions since January 2022 to develop a robust and engaging program that focuses on place. <\/p>\n<p>To introduce participants to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> virtually, the online program includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a <a href=\"https:\/\/pr-rla.org\/annual-meetings\/2022-honolulu\/\">video<\/a> about the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa campus made in collaboration with the Office of Communications; <\/li>\n<li>a <a href=\"https:\/\/pr-rla.org\/annual-meetings\/2022-honolulu\/about-university-of-hawai%CA%BBi-at-manoa-library\/\">history of the library<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>information about <a href=\"https:\/\/pr-rla.org\/annual-meetings\/2022-honolulu\/about-manoa-honolulu\/\">M\u0101noa Valley<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pr-rla.org\/annual-meetings\/2022-honolulu\/univ-hawaii-manoa\/\"><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa<\/a>; and<\/li>\n<li>a <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.library.manoa.hawaii.edu\/static\/aina\/\">digital exhibit<\/a>, &ldquo;Honoring the <span aria-label=\"Aina\">&#699;&#256;ina<\/span> we call Home,&rdquo; that highlights materials from the library\u2019s special collections reflecting on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> as our home. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Led by the program committee co-chairs, the digital exhibit was created with the support of web developer, <strong>Daniel Ishimitsu<\/strong>, and contributions by special collection librarians <strong>Leilani Dawson<\/strong>, <strong>Karen Kadohiro Lauer<\/strong>, <strong>Dore Minatodani<\/strong>, <strong>Jodie Mattos<\/strong>, <strong>Patricia Polansky<\/strong>, <strong>Helen Wong-Smith<\/strong>, <strong>Dawn Sueoka<\/strong> and <strong>Malia Van Heukelem<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<h2>Design inspiration<\/h2>\n<p>The design inspiration for the <a href=\"https:\/\/pr-rla.org\/annual-meetings\/2022-honolulu\/meeting-schedule\/\">schedule of events<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pr-rla.org\/annual-meetings\/2022-honolulu\/program\/\">program<\/a> comes from pohole (fiddlehead fern, also known as <em><span aria-label=\"hoio\">h&#333;&#699;i&#699;o<\/span><\/em> on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island, <em>warabi<\/em> by the local Japanese, and <em>pako<\/em> by Filipinos), which is grown and harvested all over the Pacific and Asia and used in cuisines globally. The design choice for the <abbr>PRRLA<\/abbr> 2022 meeting represents a shared connection with the land and how it nourishes us across cultures. Kikuchi Design created the schedule and the program, including text, photos and the layout.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>PRRLA<\/abbr> Annual Meeting alternates among member countries across and in the Pacific.
