High rates of diet-related health disparities have long impacted the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI<\/abbr>) communities of Hawaiʻi<\/span>. Joseph Keaweʻaimoku<\/span> Kaholokula<\/strong>, chair of Native Hawaiian health<\/a> at the University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> at Mānoa John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a>, will give an overview of the social and cultural determinants of health for NHPI<\/abbr>s and their current health status as part of the “The Future of Food & Agriculture in Hawaiʻi<\/span>” series<\/a> on November 11, at 5 p.m., at Ka Waiwai ma Mōʻiliʻili<\/span> (110 University Avenue, Suite 100).<\/p>\n

The talk will be hosted by Honolulu Civil Beat<\/em> reporter Anita Hofschneider. Through “NHPI<\/abbr> Health Inequities-Root Causes & Systemic Solutions,” Kaholokula will also highlight examples of successful and culturally responsive health promotion programs.<\/p>\n

The monthly series, which runs through June 2023, is presented by The Hawaiʻi<\/span> Institute for Sustainable Community Food Systems at 东精影业<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span><\/a>, Honolulu Civil Beat<\/em>, 东精影业<\/abbr> Better Tomorrow Speaker Series<\/a> and Waiwai Collective. The series is designed to generate opportunities for community dialogue among a diverse audience, ultimately aiming to achieve a more healthy, equitable, resilient and sustainable food system for Hawaiʻi<\/span>.<\/p>\n
