A University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> at M\u0101noa professor of psychiatry<\/a> was honored for her significant contributions to advance the Native Hawaiian community. Naleen Naupaka Andrade<\/strong> of the John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (JABSOM<\/abbr>), was one of three individuals honored with the annual Ōʻō<\/span> Award from the Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce <\/a>on October 21.<\/p>\n

Humbled by the honor, Andrade said, “When you\u2019re doing it, you don\u2019t really think about it. I have a passion for advancing Native Hawaiian health and ensuring that we\u2019re healthy.”<\/p>\n

Born in Honolulu and raised in Kona, Andrade earned her BA<\/abbr> in biology from 东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a> and graduated from JABSOM<\/abbr>\u2019s ʻImi<\/span> Hoʻōla<\/span><\/a> program and medical school. She started her career in 1986 after completing her residency training in Hawaiʻi<\/span>. She\u2019s been at JABSOM<\/abbr> since, working on advancing education, mentoring and research to better understand contributors to health and well-being among Indigenous peoples.<\/p>\n

Andrade held various roles in the psychiatry department, including professor, researcher and department chair. She has also held leadership roles in the JABSOM<\/abbr> dean\u2019s office and served as the chair of the Queen\u2019s Medical Center Board of Trustees. She is JABSOM<\/abbr>\u2019s director of the National Center on Indigenous Hawaiian Behavioral Health.<\/p>\n

Andrade is currently on leave to become the executive vice-president of Native Hawaiian Health, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice, and Caregiver Wellness at The Queen\u2019s Health Systems of Hawaiʻi<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Since it was first awarded, the Ōʻō<\/span> has become one of the most prestigious and coveted awards specifically for Native Hawaiians and has become a symbol of inspiration for young Native Hawaiians.<\/p>\n
