{"id":16811,"date":"2013-05-14T17:17:03","date_gmt":"2013-05-15T03:17:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=16811"},"modified":"2020-10-26T14:51:08","modified_gmt":"2020-10-27T00:51:08","slug":"uh-hilo-app-wins-prestigious-imagine-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/05\/14\/uh-hilo-app-wins-prestigious-imagine-cup\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo app wins prestigious Imagine Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HL2BMAsEv2Q\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A student team from the <a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> beat out dozens of other teams, from universities across the country, to take the top prize in the 2013 Imagine Cup U.S. Finals in San Jose, California. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imaginecup.com\/#?fbid=YNV3NVapMmp\">Imagine Cup<\/a> is sponsored by Microsoft and is considered the world&#8217;s premier student technology competition. <\/p>\n<p><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo students <strong>Mike Purvis<\/strong>, <strong>Ryder Donahue<\/strong>, <strong>Kayton Summers<\/strong> and <strong>Wallace Hamada<\/strong> created an app called Help Me Help. The app allows users to share photos and information about hazards they may encounter in emergency situations like fires, floods or roadblocks. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;During disasters, people are often panicked and they might not be able to describe very well over the phone, the exact details of the situation,&rdquo; said Purvis. &ldquo;Virtually everyone has a smart phone these days and so that&#8217;s really why we want to tap into the camera for this purpose.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>Help Me Help is getting attention nationally and could have a real impact locally. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We&#8217;ve already talked to a local civil defense representative and he said they are very interested in the application, they have ideas in the past that are similar to it,&rdquo; said Donahue. <\/p>\n<p><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo administrators and faculty are bursting with pride that a group of <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo students created something to help their own community, and the world.
