Wong Smith received the award in September. The recognition is not open for nominations and is given at the discretion of the <abbr>CoSA<\/abbr> president.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>CoSA<\/abbr> is a nonprofit membership organization providing leadership and support for state and territorial government archives in 50 states, five territories and the District of Columbia. While not a member herself, Wong Smith was invited by <abbr>CoSA<\/abbr> to present a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=soCme5SL0Bc\">2020 webinar on how cultural competency benefits archives<\/a>, followed by an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vNamYiH6sJw\">online discussion<\/a>, and included her in an Institute of Museum and Library Services (<abbr>IMLS<\/abbr>) funded project to provide training and mentoring support for its members.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;To receive the President\u02bbs Award of Excellence from an organization I am not a member of is an unexpected honor and reflects the applicability of the cultural competency framework in our society,&rdquo; said Wong Smith. &ldquo;There are a myriad of opportunities to integrate cultural competency awareness and training which can have immediate effects and hopefully influence policy and procedures.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Assistance with <abbr>CoSA<\/abbr> grant<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_168489\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-168489\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/manoa-library-wong-smith-helen-2-300x169.jpeg\" alt=\"helen wong smith looking at photos\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-168489\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/manoa-library-wong-smith-helen-2-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/manoa-library-wong-smith-helen-2-130x73.jpeg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/manoa-library-wong-smith-helen-2.jpeg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-168489\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wong Smith scans through old photos in the Hamilton Library archives.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><abbr>CoSA<\/abbr> Immediate Past President W. Eric Emerson applauded Smith for her extraordinary contributions to the <abbr>IMLS<\/abbr> grant, <abbr>BACKER<\/abbr> (Building Archival Capacity for Keeping Electronic Records), and its integral emphasis on ensuring that cultural competency and awareness are part of building useful and responsive digital repositories and electronic records programs. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Helen\u2019s unmatched expertise in cultural competency and thoughtful guidance has been so helpful to <abbr>CoSA<\/abbr> members during the first year of the grant, and we look forward to her continued contribution to <abbr>CoSA<\/abbr>\u2019s cultural competency emphasis,&ldquo; Emerson said. &ldquo;We know that the work she is doing with us over this three-year grant will have a lasting impact on state and territorial archives far into the future, on our collections, our users and our workforce.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>Wong Smith led a survey project to assess nationwide cultural competency in state archives, which resulted in a vital report, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statearchivists.org\/viewdocument\/relevant-respectful-and-responsiv\">Relevant, Respectful, and Responsive: Government Archives in the 21st Century\u2013An Overview of Cultural Competency in State and Territorial Archives in 2022<\/a><\/em>. The report will help guide <abbr>CoSA<\/abbr>\u2019s effort in assisting state and territorial archives reach greater cultural competency. In addition, she used the results of the report and created and offered a series of cultural competency workshops, followed by hosting monthly discussion groups. <\/p>\n<p>Wong Smith has served as archivist for University Records since 2018. She earned her bachelor\u2019s degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/kamakakuokalani\/degrees\/bachelor-hawaiian-studies\/\">Hawaiian studies<\/a> and a master\u2019s in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/lis\/\">library and information science<\/a> from <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. She currently serves as vice-president\/president-elect of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.archivists.org\/\">Society of American Archivists<\/a>, the oldest and largest national organization of professional archivists in North America, and is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/04\/05\/helen-wong-smith-elected-to-saa\/\">first person from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> to hold this position<\/a>.
