  {"id":168654,"date":"2022-11-04T13:46:34","date_gmt":"2022-11-04T23:46:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=168654"},"modified":"2022-11-04T13:50:31","modified_gmt":"2022-11-04T23:50:31","slug":"ck-student-career-expo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/11\/04\/ck-student-career-expo\/","title":{"rendered":"More than 1,000 high schoolers explore careers at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West O\u02bbahu"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_168662\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-168662\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/ck-student-career-expo.jpg\" alt=\"Image courtesy of Pearlena Stone\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-168662\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/ck-student-career-expo.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/ck-student-career-expo-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/ck-student-career-expo-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-168662\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo courtesy of Pearlena Stone)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>About 1,300 ninth graders from James Campbell and Kapolei high schools had the opportunity to interview almost 70 employers and businesses and explore professions in a variety of career fields at the <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> on October 28, for the third annual Campbell-Kapolei (<abbr>CK<\/abbr>) Student Career Expo.<\/p>\n<p>The event\u2014presented by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapoleichamber.com\/\">Kapolei Chamber of Commerce<\/a> in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksbe.edu\/\">Kamehameha Schools<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiipublicschools.org\/Pages\/Home.aspx\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Department of Education<\/a> and <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>\u2014was held in person after a two-year break.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;These businesses come together to represent industry pathways for students to determine if those careers would be a good fit for them in the future,&rdquo; said Kiran Polk, executive director of the Kapolei Chamber of Commerce. &ldquo;Students interviewed employers from at least three career fields of their choice and had the opportunity to engage with many industry professionals.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Among the freshmen who attended was Evette, a Campbell High School student.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was very informative, and I had an enjoyable time getting to know the people and (visiting) the booths,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;It helped me learn more about myself and all my interests, and what career path I want to get into when I get older.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>\u2019s critical role<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Lokelani Kenolio<\/strong>, director of enrollment services at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, said it was wonderful to see all the participating students dressed in their professional wear, ready to explore potential career pathways. She noted the expo was the first time many of the ninth graders set foot on a college campus.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> campus in the students\u2019 backyard, West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> has a critical role to contribute to the educational pipeline of growing our future leaders and workforce members,&rdquo; Kenolio said. &ldquo;Bringing students on campus to connect with our faculty, staff and university community is the first step in welcoming students to the college experience.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>More than 65 <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> student leaders, staff and faculty helped out by greeting students, sharing about <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> programs, guiding impromptu campus tours, setting up and cleaning up, and more.<\/p>\n<h2>Kapolei Chamber &lsquo;bridging the gap&rsquo;<\/h2>\n<p>The inaugural <abbr>CK<\/abbr> Student Career Expo was held in 2018, and was the first of its kind in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The expo occurs with intention just before the ninth graders confirm their career academy selection,&rdquo; said Polk. &ldquo;Students then have the opportunity to explore and learn more about their selected career pathway during the 10th through 12th grades through internships and mentorships.
