She said the <a href=\"https:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/hawaiipromise\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Promise<\/a> scholarship helped her to focus on her educational goals in the community college\u2019s paralegal program, since she did not have to worry about money.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_172520\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-172520\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/cc-hawaii-promise-miranda-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"person holding diploma\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-172520\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/cc-hawaii-promise-miranda-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/cc-hawaii-promise-miranda-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/cc-hawaii-promise-miranda.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-172520\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Miranda Schreier holding her diploma<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;That scholarship was a complete blessing for me,&rdquo; Schreier said. &ldquo;I was able to focus more on my studies and I just had a huge weight lifted off of my shoulders.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> is asking state lawmakers this legislative session to consider expanding <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Promise to the four-year institutions&#8212;<abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa, <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo and <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> by increasing annual funding by &#36;19 million. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/govrel\/docs\/house\/2023\/hb0390-hd1_uoh_02-22-23_fin_support.pdf\">House Bill 390<\/a> HD1, which expands the law to include the three campuses, was passed by the House of Representatives and crossed over to the Senate. The measure has to be scheduled for a hearing the week of March 20 or it will be considered dead in the 2023 legislative session.<\/p>\n<p>Often referred to as a last-dollar scholarship, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Promise is currently only available to qualified <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Community College students, covering their direct costs of education that are not covered by federal grants and other scholarships. The program started in fall 2017 and has helped 8,852 <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Community College students with financial need since, including 2,139 students during the 2021&#8211;22 academic year alone. <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> awarded more than &#36;4.88 million, supporting those students with tuition, books, supplies and transportation costs. Students must qualify for federal aid to qualify for the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Promise scholarships.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/hawaii-promise\/\">Read more about the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Promise Program<\/a><\/span>\t<\/p>\n<p>Almost two-thirds (60&#37;) of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Promise scholarships were awarded to underrepresented students, such as Native Hawaiians, Filipinos and Pacific Islanders&#8212;a higher share than the 52&#37; of underrepresented students enrolled at the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Community Colleges that year.<\/p>\n<h2>Improved performance<\/h2>\n<p>The fourth year of the state-funded <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Promise program also yielded impressive results:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Promise recipients attempted and earned more credits than non-awardees. <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Promise recipients earned 15.8 credits on average compared to 11.7 credits on average for all degree-seeking students in academic year 2021&#8211;22.<\/li>\n<li><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Promise recipients had higher passing rates than their peers and earned higher grades with <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Promise recipients earning an average 3.0 cumulative <abbr title=\"grade point average\">GPA<\/abbr> compared to an average 2.8 cumulative <abbr>GPA<\/abbr> for non-Promise students in fall 2021.<\/li>\n<li>Full-time <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Promise recipients were more likely to continue to be enrolled at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> than non-awardees. In fall 2022, 69&#37; of recipients were still enrolled, compared to 61&#37; of non-awardees.<\/li>\n<li>Part-time <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Promise recipients returned at a higher rate than their peers&#8212;56&#37; Schreier said. &ldquo;It\u2019s a wonderful program that I really hope to see expanded.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>After graduating in the spring with a bachelor\u2019s degree in English, Schreier plans to continue on to earn an <abbr title=\"master of business administration\">MBA<\/abbr> or law degree, or both.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Even though I\u2019m in my last semester at M&#257;noa, and my tuition is already paid for, this program can impact generations of students to come,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I worried about whether or not I was going to have food for the night or food for month, and if I was going to be able to afford my rent, if I was going to be able to pay for my textbooks, what other things I would have to go ahead and pay for,&rdquo; said <strong>Shane Shimabukuro<\/strong>, who received the scholarship while at Honolulu <abbr title=\"community college\">CC<\/abbr>, and is now studying pre-business at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa. &ldquo;It has helped me, and I can only imagine the extent of the help that it could do for many other students&#8212;helping relieve the fear of economic insecurity.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lindsey Millerd<\/strong> is a junior majoring in Hawaiian and Indigenous health and healing at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu.\">O&#699;ahu.<\/span> She received the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Promise scholarship at Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, where she earned an associate\u2019s degree in 2022.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_172522\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-172522\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/cc-hawaii-promise-lindsey-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Graduate in cap and gown\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-172522\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/cc-hawaii-promise-lindsey-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/cc-hawaii-promise-lindsey-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/cc-hawaii-promise-lindsey.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-172522\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lindsey Millerd<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;It was really helpful in just allowing me to focus on school, doing well in my classes, and not having to stress too much about paying or working to pay off my tuition at that time,&rdquo;
