A project goal is to expand, reaching more Native Hawaiian communities throughout the state. Another project goal is to encourage new Native Hawaiian researchers to ensure that methods used in health promotion are grounded in Hawaiian traditions and culture.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/manoa-cancer-center-omidyar-ku-ola-project-300x170.jpeg\" alt=\"post its on board answering question\" width=\"300\" height=\"170\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-173314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/manoa-cancer-center-omidyar-ku-ola-project-300x170.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/manoa-cancer-center-omidyar-ku-ola-project-130x74.jpeg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/manoa-cancer-center-omidyar-ku-ola-project.jpeg 672w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For more than a decade, the K\u016b Ola project has supported health promotion in Native Hawaiian men by holding k\u016bk\u0101k\u016bk\u0101 (discussion sessions) with k\u0101ne. The project has also captured the knowledge of kupuna k\u0101ne for posterity. K\u016b Ola is guided by the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Cancer Center\u2019s Native Hawaiian Community Advisory Board, a group of Native Hawaiian health professionals and community partners. <\/p>\n<p>High rates of chronic illnesses and behaviors often result in a higher risk of death for Native Hawaiians, particularly for Native Hawaiian men. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We recognize that many of the chronic health challenges Native Hawaiians face, especially men, are the result of systemic inequalities that lead them to forego doctor visits and healthcare priorities,&rdquo; said <strong>Claire K. Hughes<\/strong>, chair of the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Cancer Center\u2019s Native Hawaiian Community Advisory Board. &ldquo;Building upon the strengths of our community and incorporating Hawaiian practices and cultural values in health promotion can be effective in reducing chronic illness.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Collaboration with communities<\/h2>\n<p>K\u016b Ola\u2019s leadership team is working to build collaboration with more Native Hawaiian communities. As a project launch, K\u016b Ola met with community organizations in Kona <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, in early February. The purpose of the meeting was to increase connections and identify strategies to address the health needs of Native Hawaiians in the West <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> community.
