Josh Green<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>February was national <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acteonline.org\/why-cte\/cte-awareness\/cte-month\/\">Career and Technical Education (<abbr>CTE<\/abbr>) Month<\/a>, and a highlight for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/\">Leeward Community College<\/a> was when Gov. Josh Green proclaimed it to be &ldquo;Career and Technical Education Month&rdquo; in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/leeward-cte-month-gnrc-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Person working with kalo plants\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-174470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/leeward-cte-month-gnrc-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/leeward-cte-month-gnrc-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/leeward-cte-month-gnrc-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> is experiencing a workforce shortage in crucial fields like healthcare, technology, skilled trades, agribusiness and creative media,&rdquo; said Green. &ldquo;Our administration is grateful to Leeward Community College for its Career and Technical Education, and Office of Continuing Education and Workforce Development programs, which prepare students for highly needed jobs for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, now and into the future. Leeward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> had 1,673 postsecondary <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> participants out of the 6,523 in the state for the 2020&#8211;21 school year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ron Umehira<\/strong>, Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s dean of career and technical education was among the 15 invitees to the signing ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are grateful that Governor Green understands the importance of <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> Month as a public awareness campaign to celebrate the value, rigor and relevance of <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> and workforce development programs that we offer our students,&rdquo; Umehira said.<\/p>\n<h2>Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> celebration<\/h2>\n<p>At Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, several events highlighted how <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> programs educate students to become college and career ready, preparing them for high-wage, in-demand career fields.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><abbr>CTE<\/abbr> programs were on display in the Learning Commons\/Library throughout the month.<\/li>\n<li>Volunteers, from within the campus and the community, offered free tax services for the community through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.<\/li>\n<li>Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s Culinary Arts Program hosted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CoyPH9OBULr\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link\">demonstration and Q&#38;A session<\/a> by Chef Melissa Miranda of Musang Seattle.<\/li>\n<li>Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s Sustainable Agriculture and Culinary Arts programs hosted a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=bg_6pYCiFY0&#038;si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE\">Louisiana Crawfish Boil<\/a>. This event featured presentations by the <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Invasive Species Committee and guests from Louisiana representing Fletcher Technical Community College and Chefs Brigade.
