Bacterial attachment is the critical first step for establishing infections, making the process an ideal target to prevent disease or hinder progression.<\/p>\n<p>In the U.S., there are about 40,000 children and adults living with <abbr>CF<\/abbr>, spanning every racial and ethnic group. People with <abbr>CF<\/abbr> have thick mucus built up in their lungs, which provides a favorable environment for bacteria to establish chronic infections.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>Bcc<\/abbr> infection has been associated with a more rapid decline in <abbr>CF<\/abbr> lung function, increased hospitalizations and significantly decreased life expectancy,&rdquo; Hoang said. &ldquo;The treatment of <abbr>Bcc<\/abbr> infection is particularly challenging due to intrinsic antibacterial drug resistance.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_174820\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-174820\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/manoa-life-sciences-zhenxin-sun-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"person headshot\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-174820\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/manoa-life-sciences-zhenxin-sun-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/manoa-life-sciences-zhenxin-sun-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/manoa-life-sciences-zhenxin-sun.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-174820\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Postdoctoral researcher Zhenxin Sun<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The grant will enable the researchers to further explore the significance of <abbr>Bcc<\/abbr> and its host interaction, using <em>in vitro<\/em> tissue cultures and <em>in vivo<\/em> models, in whole living organisms such as mice and fruit flies.
