  {"id":175496,"date":"2023-04-10T13:25:20","date_gmt":"2023-04-10T23:25:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=175496"},"modified":"2023-04-10T13:32:04","modified_gmt":"2023-04-10T23:32:04","slug":"removal-maunakea-observatory-cso","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/04\/10\/removal-maunakea-observatory-cso\/","title":{"rendered":"Removal of Maunakea observatory to begin in spring"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_111585\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111585\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/system-caltech-telescope.jpg\" alt=\"The California Institute of Technology Submillimeter Observatory\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-111585\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/system-caltech-telescope.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/system-caltech-telescope-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/system-caltech-telescope-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-111585\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The California Institute of Technology Submillimeter Observatory<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The physical removal of the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (<abbr>CSO<\/abbr>) on Maunakea is scheduled to begin by early May after extensive planning and permitting, according to an April 6 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cso.caltech.edu\/wiki\/cso\/outreach\/2023-04-06\"><abbr>CSO<\/abbr> news release<\/a>. <abbr>CSO<\/abbr> is following the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/maunakea\/stewardship\/documents\/management\/comprehensive-plan\/CMP_DecommissioningPlan_2010.pdf\">2010 Decommissioning Sub Plan<\/a> (<small><abbr title=\"portable document format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/small>) of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dlnr.hawaii.gov\/occl\/files\/2020\/12\/2009-Comprehensive-Management-Plan-April.pdf\">Maunakea Comprehensive Management Plan<\/a> (<small><abbr title=\"portable document format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/small>) for the observatory removal and site restoration.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Over the winter, we finalized plans and prepared permitting applications to remove the telescope and transport it from the mountain,&rdquo; said <abbr>CSO<\/abbr> Director Sunil Golwala in the release. &ldquo;To transport the main mirror of the telescope to the harbor will require several road closures. We are alerting state and county agencies, the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at Hilo <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/maunakea\/\">Center for Maunakea Stewardship<\/a> (<abbr>CMS<\/abbr>) and the community at each step.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>CSO<\/abbr> is one of two Maunakea observatories expected to be fully decommissioned in 2023. The physical removal of the <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo H&#333;k&#363; <span aria-label=\"Kea\">Ke&#699;a<\/span> observatory is expected to begin in the fall.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Decommissioning an observatory is a complicated process involving regulatory approvals ensuring environmental stewardship and public safety,&rdquo; said <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo <abbr>CMS<\/abbr> Executive Director <strong>Greg Chun<\/strong>. &ldquo;The progress being made on the decommissioning of the first two observatories on Maunakea honors a longstanding commitment made by the university. We will complete this important work as we continue to work diligently on the transition to the Maunakea Stewardship and Oversight Authority.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>CSO<\/abbr> is coordinating with the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Department of Transportation, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> County Police Department and County of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Department of Public Works on road permitting requirements for transporting the telescope\u2019s 34-foot diameter primary reflector to Kawaihae Harbor on the Kona coast.<\/p>\n<p>The entire removal process including a practice run is expected to take about six weeks and will involve publicly announced road closures. Much of the work and major road closures will take place between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. to minimize public impact. A map of the anticipated transport route can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/iropsn17h62btbx\/Transport%20Route%20-%20230324%20revised.pdf?dl=0\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Other telescope parts will be taken down from the summit as weather permits,&rdquo; said Golwala. &ldquo;As those parts are smaller, no road closures will be required.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Once the telescope is removed, the buildings that housed the <abbr>CSO<\/abbr> telescope will be dismantled and the site restored.
