The name <span aria-label=\"Hoikeakea\">H&#333;&#699;ike&#257;kea<\/span> comes from the Hawaiian words <span aria-label=\"hoike\">h&#333;&#699;ike<\/span> (to show\/exhibit\/reveal, cause to be seen), ike (to see\/know\/experience\/understand) and \u0101kea (broad, wide expanse, spacious).<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This gallery has been a longtime dream for many in our Leeward Community. Former Dean of Arts and Sciences <strong>Jim Goodman<\/strong>, as well as retired faculty <strong>Michael Harada<\/strong> worked tirelessly with <strong>Mark Lane<\/strong> (former vice chancellor) to get this initiative off the ground. Situated in close proximity to <span aria-label=\"Puuloa\">Pu&#699;uloa<\/span> (Pearl Harbor), <span aria-label=\"Hoikeakea\">H&#333;&#699;ike&#257;kea<\/span> acknowledges the responsibility of place, as it designs exhibitions that invite artists from beyond <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> to have a dialogue with artists from within. The gallery\u2019s unique location establishes <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> within a larger discourse on art, while encouraging critical thinking through aesthetic experiences that are cross-disciplinary and relevant to contemporary social narratives.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the gallery\u2019s broader programming, <span aria-label=\"Hoikeakea\">H&#333;&#699;ike&#257;kea<\/span> Gallery will have an annual juried student show for local high schools, as well as a Leeward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> student show.<\/p>\n<p>Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> has long been the center for higher education in the arts for West and Central <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> residents. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/theatre\">Leeward Theatre<\/a>, open again after closure during the pandemic, will celebrate its 50th season in 2023, and the campus recently installed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/01\/18\/student-art-shark-guardians-leeward-cc\/\">student mural<\/a> fronting the library to showcase the infusion of Indigenous culture into the art curriculum.<\/p>\n<h2><span aria-label=\"Ai\">&#699;Ai<\/span> P\u014dhaku, Stone Eaters<\/h2>\n<p>The first exhibition at <span aria-label=\"Hoikeakea\">H&#333;&#699;ike&#257;kea<\/span> Gallery, <span aria-label=\"Ai\">&#699;Ai<\/span> P\u014dhaku, Stone Eaters, pays homage to Hawaiian artists and culture bearers, and offers audiences an opportunity to form meaningful connections to their diverse work while ensuring that their story-telling, through art, is sustained in their ancestral homelands and abroad.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/hoikeakea-gallery-uhanelelemai.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-176008\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/hoikeakea-gallery-uhanelelemai.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/hoikeakea-gallery-uhanelelemai-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/hoikeakea-gallery-uhanelelemai-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The exhibition at <span aria-label=\"Hoikeakea\">H&#333;&#699;ike&#257;kea<\/span> Gallery runs May 1&#8211;August 25 and will feature pieces by the following artists:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>N&#257;lamak&#363;ikap&#333; Ahsing<\/li>\n<li>Bernice Akamine<\/li>\n<li>Kaili Chun<\/li>\n<li>Herman <span aria-label=\"Piikea\">Pi&#699;ikea<\/span> Clark<\/li>\n<li>Joy Lehuanani Enomoto<\/li>\n<li>Solomon Robert Nui Enos<\/li>\n<li>Noah Harders<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kapulani Landgraf<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Nanea Lum<\/li>\n<li>Charlton <span aria-label=\"KUpaa\">K&#363;pa&#699;a<\/span> Hee<\/li>\n<li>Ip&#333; and K&#363;nani Nihipali<\/li>\n<li>Tiare Ribeaux<\/li>\n<li>Abigail Romanchak<\/li>\n<li><span aria-label=\"Maikai\">Maika&#699;i<\/span> Tubbs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This will be the fifth in a series of six exhibitions to open across UH campuses on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>. According to <span aria-label=\"Ai\">&#699;Ai<\/span> P\u014dhaku co-curators <strong>Drew <span aria-label=\"Kahuaina\">Kahu&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> Broderick<\/strong>, <strong>Noelle M.K.Y. Kahanu<\/strong> and Josh Tengan, this is a significant showing and cause for celebration, and they say it is the first large-scale exhibition of K\u0101naka <span aria-label=\"Oiwi\">&#699;&#332;iwi<\/span> (Native Hawaiian) art within the <abbr>¶«¾«Ó°Òµ<\/abbr> System in 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>More details about the gallery and the grand opening can be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/the-arts#hoikeakea\">www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/the-arts#hoikeakea<\/a>.
