(Photo credit: NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In support of student research focused on marine science, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.himb.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology<\/a> (<abbr>HIMB<\/abbr>) at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa hosted its annual Student Scholarship Symposium on May 16. The event showcased the work of 15 undergraduate and graduate haum&#257;na (students) for an audience of more than 100 <abbr>HIMB<\/abbr> faculty, researchers, fellow students and donors who have supported the students\u2019 research.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;With this event, we are excited to share the diversity of current research projects at <abbr>HIMB<\/abbr>, showcase our students, and show our appreciation to our scholarship donors,&rdquo; said <span aria-label=\"Kuulei\">Ku&#699;ulei<\/span> Rodgers, a researcher at <abbr>HIMB<\/abbr> and a member of the <abbr>HIMB<\/abbr> Scholarship Committee.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_178373\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-178373\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/manoa-himb-symposium-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"group photo\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-178373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/manoa-himb-symposium-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/manoa-himb-symposium-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/manoa-himb-symposium.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-178373\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>HIMB<\/abbr> Scholarship Symposium presenters and attendees, 2023.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Haum&#257;na representing 13 different labs at <abbr>HIMB<\/abbr> presented applied and solution-based research on a broad range of marine research topics encompassing coral reefs, sharks, whales, monk seals and fishes. Projects were focused near and far&#8212;with some students working locally in <span aria-label=\"Kaneohe\">K&#257;ne&#699;ohe<\/span> Bay or a Windward <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> loko <span aria-label=\"ia\">&#699;ia<\/span> (fishpond) and another assessing Guam&#8217;s green sea turtles.<\/p>\n<h2>Donor generosity supports student research<\/h2>\n<p>Thanks to the generosity of Carol Ann and Myron K. Hayashida Student Fund, Peter Castro Graduate Student Research Fund, Alan Church Environmental Steward Scholarship, Ruth D. Gates Memorial Fund, Colonel Wilys E. Lord, DMV &amp; Sandina L. Lord Scholarship, Schmidt Ocean Institute Undergraduate Research Fund, and Ashley Marie Smith Memorial Research Fund, the <abbr>HIMB<\/abbr> Scholarship Program awarded $112,000 in support of the 15 students this past year. Scholarships were used for tuition assistance, books, lab supplies, travel and other research costs. These scholarships are helping to build the future for marine research in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii.\">Hawai&#699;i.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The scholarship funding has supported me in my research efforts and contributed to my academic and professional development,&rdquo; said scholarship recipient Leah Shizuru.<\/p>\n<p>Graduate student Josefa Munoz, who received a travel scholarship said, &ldquo;I\u2019m grateful that the funding helped cover my student fees and allowed me to present my research at the 2023 International Sea Turtle Symposium in Cartagena, Colombia.
