The updated plan will be less disruptive to the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island community because it will not require extensive road closures.<\/p>\n<p>The telescope parts will be transported in standard shipping containers and sent to Chile where it will be reassembled and used. Once the telescope removal is complete, the <abbr>CSO<\/abbr> buildings will be removed and the site restored. The total cost, which will be paid for by Caltech, is expected to be more than $4 million. It is one of two Maunakea observatories expected to be fully decommissioned by the end of 2023. The physical removal of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at Hilo H\u014dk\u016b <span aria-label=\"Kea\">Ke&#699;a<\/span> observatory is expected to begin in the fall.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>CSO<\/abbr> and <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo are following the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/maunakea\/stewardship\/documents\/management\/comprehensive-plan\/CMP_DecommissioningPlan_2010.pdf\">2010 Decommissioning Sub Plan<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>) of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dlnr.hawaii.gov\/occl\/files\/2020\/12\/2009-Comprehensive-Management-Plan-April.pdf\">Maunakea Comprehensive Management Plan<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr>PDF<\/abbr><\/span>) for the observatory removal and site restoration.
