The best varieties of carrots to grow!"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_182311\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-182311\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/manoa-ctahr-carrot-field-day.png\" alt=\"people in field harvesting carrots\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-182311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/manoa-ctahr-carrot-field-day.png 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/manoa-ctahr-carrot-field-day-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/manoa-ctahr-carrot-field-day-130x73.png 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-182311\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Community members converge on <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr>&#8216;s Carrot Field Day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With more than 50 varieties of carrots to choose from, picking the right one to grow successfully in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> can be a daunting task.<\/p>\n<p>To offer hands-on guidance on selecting the most productive carrot, and address the public\u2019s interest for learning more, the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a> (<abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr>) <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> County Extension agents held a workshop at the Poamoho Experiment Station on August 5.<\/p>\n<p>Agents Jensen Uyeda and Koon-Hui Wang of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/PEPS\">Department of Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences<\/a> met with more than 30 growers and community members to share what carrot varieties grow best, in addition to management practices&#8212;such as fertility, nematode (plant parasites) control and irrigation&#8212;to help growers overcome challenges related to growing carrots. Each participant was able to observe carrots available in the field, as well as harvest varieties they were interested in tasting.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was so enjoyable seeing all the participants with arms full of carrots that they themselves pulled from the field,&rdquo; said Uyeda. &ldquo;Hopefully, this sparks more interest in growing carrots, and will help increase the success of carrot production in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The field day followed a successful trial by <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> Extension to evaluate 20 carrot varieties (five red, one purple and 14 orange) to determine their viability for production in the state.
