accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/figure><\/div>\n<p>When Misaki Takabayashi started as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College\u2019s<\/a> new chancellor in March, she quickly learned that students\u2019 No.1 concern was basic needs\u2014specifically skipping a meal almost daily. &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Poalua\">P&#333;&#699;alua<\/span> (Tuesday) Pancakes&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/culinaryinstitute.hawaii.edu\/\">Culinary Institute of the Pacific<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/support-and-campus-life\/student-congress\/\">Student Congress<\/a> are also collaborators in <span aria-label=\"Poalua\">P&#333;&#699;alua<\/span> Pancakes.<\/p>\n<h2>Building the hale<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_182566\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-182566\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/kapiolani-takabayashi-poalua.jpg\" alt=\"Pancake poster\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" class=\"size-full wp-image-182566\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/kapiolani-takabayashi-poalua.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/kapiolani-takabayashi-poalua-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-182566\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> CC is serving free pancakes every Tuesday.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Takabayashi said student success is the bottom line by which <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> leadership will make decisions. It\u2019s all part of the vision for the campus, being developed in the next strategic plan, which she likens to a 3D architectural rendering of a house.<\/p>\n<p>The foundation of the modern, open-air structure with no rooms and walls is <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and its Native Hawaiian host culture. <\/p>\n<p>No surprise for a campus with a well-known culinary arts program&#8212;this house has a lovely, big kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We\u2019re cooking with two ingredients&#8212;student success and a thriving, sustainable campus,&rdquo; Takabayashi explained. &ldquo;We cook those and then the dish we provide is workforce capacity building. She is a marine scientist, specializing in coral reef molecular ecology and earned a doctorate of philosophy in marine science from the University of Queensland, Australia and a master of science in biology and bachelor of science in biology from the University of Sydney, Australia.<\/p>\n<p>She said she &ldquo;grew up&rdquo; as an adult and educator at the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at Hilo<\/a>, serving as interim associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, associate dean for college of arts and sciences, department chair for marine science and a researcher. During her tenure at <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo, she also learned to speak Hawaiian, and earned an associate of applied science in Hawaiian studies from <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She credits <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/kipuka.uhh.hawaii.edu\/wipce2014\/docs\/Uluakea%20Presentation.pdf\">Ulu&#257;kea (<small><abbr title=\"portable document format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/small>)<\/a> faculty development program with her growth there.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;They empowered us and gave us tools to have authentic experiences with <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2014visiting places or experiencing things ourselves that we could teach our discipline through some of the lenses of the land and of the place,&rdquo; she recalled. &ldquo;As a scientist, I learned so much about the ocean of a place just by the (Hawaiian) name of that particular place.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Looking forward and outward<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_182564\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-182564\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/kapiolani-takabayashi-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"woman at podium\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-182564\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/kapiolani-takabayashi-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/kapiolani-takabayashi-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/kapiolani-takabayashi-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-182564\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chancellor Misaki Takabayashi at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> CC\u2019s May 2023 commencement.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Her last post before <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> was as associate vice president\/vice dean of graduate school, Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University, Japan.<\/p>\n<p>The ability to move quickly and nimbly attracted her to serve at a community college, as did the location in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The world comes to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> is really the center of the Pacific, not just geographically but in terms of international relations with the Asia Pacific and commercial or governmental relationships, we play a critical role in supplying global talent,&rdquo; Takabayashi said.<\/p>\n<p>The college and its partners aim to send more students, faculty and staff overseas for &ldquo;transformative experiences,&rdquo; and to become more globally aware.<\/p>\n<p>She said it is an opportune moment in time when resources, opportunities and demands are converging.<\/p>\n<p>Takabayashi said, &ldquo;Ultimately the whole point is\u2014it&#8217;s good for the graduates, getting a good job or creating a good job for themselves, but really the whole thing is to enhance the workforce capacity of the community.
