It is the third consecutive year that funds raised for UH have exceeded $100 million.<\/p>\n<p>The giving included several sizable gifts from anonymous donors to unique and innovative programs, including $4.6 million for the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/02\/09\/gift-boosts-ciihe\/\"><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Center for Indigenous Innovation and Health Equity<\/a> and a $2 million gift to preserve the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/06\/11\/2m-donation-hamilton-library-collections\/\">special collections at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s Hamilton Library<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Donors also addressed the most basic struggles some students encounter in college, such as affording food and housing. To that end, the Stupski Foundation gave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/03\/15\/stupski-foundation-support-students-basic-needs\/\">$1.8 million to address college affordability and basic needs<\/a> for students.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;What\u2019s incredible about these results is the breadth and depth of support for <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> and the number of donors who support our state university,&rdquo; said Tim Dolan, vice president of advancement at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> and <abbr>CEO<\/abbr> of <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Foundation. &ldquo;We\u2019ve seen how our donors respond to the most pressing issues facing <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and we\u2019re seeing that this year with their gifts to help Maui. We couldn\u2019t be more grateful.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Among the 23,712 gifts received were those made by individuals and families in memory of loved ones, including faculty members or their spouses.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_183580\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-183580\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/foundation-rise-2023-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"People standing\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-183580\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/foundation-rise-2023-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/foundation-rise-2023-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/foundation-rise-2023.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-183580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">President David Lassner at the RISE blessing<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Alumni and other individuals also committed substantial gifts to <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> for scholarships, faculty, research, facilities and programming for students, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/08\/22\/rise-opens-to-students\/\">Residences for Innovative Student Entrepreneurs<\/a> (<abbr>RISE<\/abbr>), a world-class innovation and entrepreneurship center and student housing facility that opened in August across from the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa campus and was built under a public-private partnership between <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Foundation, <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> and Hunt Cos.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;These results speak to the confidence our donors have in <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>\u2019s ability to improve the quality of life for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s people through higher education, now and for future generations,&rdquo; said <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> President David Lassner. &ldquo;Every gift plays a role in changing lives, whether it\u2019s our students\u2019 success, strengthening our faculty or investing in our world-class research that addresses the most important challenges and opportunities facing <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and the planet.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The total included nearly $16.5 million for student scholarships, more than $56.3 million for faculty and academic support and research and $514,266 raised during the university\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/uh-foundation-raises-514266-giving-tuesday\">third-ever Giving Tuesday<\/a> last fall.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Philanthropy plays a powerful role in moving <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> forward,&rdquo; said Rich Wacker, chair of the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Foundation Board of Trustees. &ldquo;We are grateful for each and every donor and the trust they hold for <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Workforce Development and Student Support<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A $387,586 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/honolulu-cc-receives-grant-strengthen-partnership-program-connect-learners-opportunities\">grant from the Strada Education Network<\/a> supports Honolulu Community College\u2019s collaboration with local employers such as the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Carpenters Apprenticeship and Training Fund, Johnson Controls, Kini Zamora and Pacxa to develop and expand employer advisory boards to more deeply integrate labor market needs and standards into academic programs and create career pathways for students.<\/li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_183581\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-183581\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/foundation-ching-rise-2023-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Four people holding a big check\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-183581\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/foundation-ching-rise-2023-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/foundation-ching-rise-2023-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/foundation-ching-rise-2023.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-183581\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation gave $200,000 to the RISE project<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<li>The <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Residences for Innovative Student Entrepreneurs (<abbr>RISE<\/abbr>) project, which opened in August, was the focus of giving from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/200k-gift-clarence-tc-ching-foundation-supports-students-uh-rise-program\">The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation<\/a>, the Mamoru and Aiko Takitani Foundation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/leasing-starts-rise-uh-new-leadership-scholarships-available\">others who funded scholarships<\/a> for the Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship\u2019s PACE Leaders program. The gifts are among the more than $5 million raised to support <abbr>RISE<\/abbr>.<\/li>\n<li>A $100,000 gift from Hawaiian Airlines established the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/hawaiian-airlines-endows-scholarship-it-students-university-hawaii\">airline\u2019s first <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> scholarship<\/a> for students studying information technology, computer science, cybersecurity and related computer technology programs at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo.<\/li>\n<li>The Crankstart Foundation funded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/impact\/students\/crankstart-scholarship-helps-mom-achieve-degree-goals\">Crankstart Foundation Re-entry Scholarship<\/a>, designed for working adults who\u2019ve been out of high school for a few, or many, years. Many of the recipients are also parents.<\/li>\n<li><abbr>AES<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> gave nearly $55,000 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/aes-hawaii-endows-stem-scholarship-uh-west-oahu\">endow a scholarship for students at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> interested in pursuing careers in sustainability and climate solutions, with a focus on graduates of public high schools in West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, including Campbell High School, Kapolei High School, N\u0101n\u0101kuli High School, <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> High School, and Waipahu High School.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Business and legal education<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_183582\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-183582\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/foundation-business-2023-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"People standing in a line flashing shaka and smiling\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-183582\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/foundation-business-2023-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/foundation-business-2023-130x65.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/foundation-business-2023.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-183582\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jay Shidler and Dean Vance Roley with business students<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/jay-shidler-gives-5m-cash-gift-namesake-business-college\">additional $5 million cash gift<\/a> from alumnus Jay H. Shidler to support faculty research, student scholarships, provide matching funds for strategic investments in programs and existing endowments, provide funding for visiting faculty, as well as outreach activities at the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Shidler College of Business.<\/li>\n<li>A $500,000 gift from the Cades Foundation, the charitable affiliate of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> law firm Cades Schutte, to the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa establishes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/cades-foundation-gives-500k-uh-manoa-richardson-school-law\">Cades Foundation Term Professorships<\/a> over 10 years to support and retain faculty at the only law school in one of the most expensive places in the world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Health care<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hawaii Dental Service Foundation gave nearly $650,000 during the fiscal year that went to fund two ongoing programs, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/hds-foundation-grant-serves-more-children-school-based-dental-sealant-program\">Keiki Dental Sealant program<\/a> at the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Nancy Atmospera Walch School of Nursing and the dental hygiene program at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Maui College and the newly established part-time faculty position at the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM)&#8212;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/225m-endowment-establishes-jabsoms-inaugural-oral-health-director\">an oral health director<\/a> to integrate oral health into the medical school\u2019s core curriculum.<\/li>\n<li>Alumna Deborah Olson gifted <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>\u2019s Pre-Nursing Pathway with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/impact\/facilities\/grateful-alum-supports-pre-nursing-uh-west-oahu\">$250,000 to address the program\u2019s priority needs<\/a> such for equipment and allow the program to increase the number of faculty.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/coolingcancer.org\/\">CoolingCancer.org<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/coolingcancerorg-donates-100k-uh-cancer-center\">$100,000 gift to the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Cancer Center<\/a>. Since 2013, the nonprofit organization has given a total of $445,000 raised from its annual golf tournament to support cancer research at the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Cancer Center.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Native Hawaiian programs<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A $4.6 million gift from an anonymous donor funds the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/anonymous-46m-gift-boosts-uh-center-indigenous-innovation-and-health-equity\">first endowed chair and programs and activities<\/a> for the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Center for Indigenous Innovation and Health Equity, which was initially established with a $1 million grant in 2021 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services\u2019 Office of Minority Health.<\/li>\n<li>The <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Pacific Foundation, a Native Hawaiian Organization whose mission is to empower Native Hawaiian communities through programs that create opportunities for success, gave a total of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/hawaii-pacific-foundation-gives-14m-uh-programs-2022\">$1.4 million to more than a half dozen <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> programs<\/a>. The gifts support programs and scholarships at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, the School of Ocean &#38; Earth Science Technology, the <span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Hawai&#699;inui\u0101kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge, the linguistics department and the Thompson School of Social Work &#38; Public Health at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, as well as programs at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><span aria-label=\"Alakaina\">Alaka&#699;ina<\/span> Foundation, a Native Hawaiian Organization based in Honolulu, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/alakaina-foundation-invests-additional-660k-uh-programs\">gave gifts totaling $660,000<\/a> that support programs at <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College, the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Community College system and <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo. With these gifts, <span aria-label=\"Alakaina\">Alaka&#699;ina<\/span> Foundation\u2019s giving to <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> over the years totals nearly $1.8 million. The gifts fund the <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> CC Digital Bus Program; scholarships for <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> CC students transferring to the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa College of Engineering and students enrolled in <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> CC\u2019s Electronics Technology program; the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Community Colleges\u2019 Online Associate in Arts Degree Program and the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo Ka Haka &#699;Ula O <span aria-label=\"Keelikolani\">Ke&#699;elik&#333;lani<\/span> College of Hawaiian Language.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Basic Needs<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Stupski Foundation provided a total of $1.8 million to fund a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/18m-partnership-stupski-foundation-aims-make-uh-affordable-accessible\">diverse set of initiatives<\/a> to help students navigate the financial aid process as well as connect to basic services and resources such as housing and food. The gift&#8212;the largest single donation ever made to the library&#8212;generously supports 12 sections that include special, area and archival collections, including maps.<\/li>\n<li>A $1 million gift from the trust of Jay Lowell Rego established the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/impact\/students\/elizabeth-spann-student-enrichment-fund-allows-students-take-advantage\">Elizabeth Spann Student Enrichment Fund<\/a> in memory of his wife, who died in 2019, allows students from a variety of disciplines within <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s College of Arts, Languages &#38; Letters (CALL) to enhance their academic experiences outside the classroom through research, travel, equipment, conference attendance, participation in performances, exhibitions, or competitions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Athletics<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_183579\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-183579\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/foundation-athletics-2023-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"People standing on the football field holding a check\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-183579\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/foundation-athletics-2023-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/foundation-athletics-2023-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/foundation-athletics-2023.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-183579\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Events at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa for the 50th anniversary of Title <abbr title=\"9\">IX<\/abbr> raised $700,000<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>Events held at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa in commemoration of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/title-ix-50th-anniversary-events-raise-700k-rainbow-wahine\">50th anniversary of Title <abbr title=\"9\">IX<\/abbr><\/a>, the historic legislation which opened the doors for women\u2019s athletics at universities across the United States, raised $700,000 to support Rainbow Wahine athletics programs.<\/li>\n<li>The <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa women\u2019s soccer team received its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/largest-gift-history-uh-womens-soccer-nan-inc-founder\">largest-ever gift, $50,000, from Nan Inc.<\/a>, whose founder, Nan Chul &ldquo;Patrick&rdquo; Shin, is an old friend of Rainbow Wahine Head Coach Michele Nagamine.<\/li>\n<li>The <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> esports program received a gift of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/aloha-pacific-fcu-starts-26k-scholarship-fund-uh-esports-students\">$26,250 from Aloha Pacific Federal Credit Union<\/a> to establish the program\u2019s first scholarship fund.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Where the money goes<\/h2>\n<p>Academic support and student aid were top beneficiaries for the fiscal year, with roughly $24 million going to each. Within the student aid category, nearly $16.5 million went to student scholarships, while $4.6 million went to the Student Aid &#038; Services Program.
