Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\"><abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Cancer Center<\/a>, died peacefully on July 31, 2023, with her husband Barry by her side.<\/p>\n<p>As president of the Weinman Foundation, Virginia was a longstanding champion of medicine and research, and will be remembered for the generosity she showed to <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> over decades.\n<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the years, Virginia and Barry Weinman paved the way for medical student education while simultaneously giving <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> leadership the financial freedom to carry out their visions for the medical school.<\/p>\n<p>Among their many contributions to <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82268\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82268\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/manoa-jabsom-full-scholarships-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"group of people with four holding a big check\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-82268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/manoa-jabsom-full-scholarships-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/manoa-jabsom-full-scholarships-1-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/manoa-jabsom-full-scholarships-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82268\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Holding the check from left, Virginia Weinman with David Lassner, Jerris Hedges and Ray Vara along with the scholarship recipients, donors and supporters.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>Provided 10 students with full medical school scholarships in 2007.<\/li>\n<li>Establishment of the Weinman Chair in 2008, a resource that previous <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> Dean Jerris Hedges and current Interim Dean Lee Buenconsejo-Lum can tap into for their initiatives. <\/li>\n<li>Offered to match the donations provided by <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Pacific Health and the Queen&#8217;s Health System in 2018. Together, the three partners made a multimillion-dollar gift resulting in 23 full-ride scholarships. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/09\/14\/weinmans-2020-jabsom-scholarships\/\">Read <em><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> News<\/em> story<\/a>) <\/li>\n<li>Provided significant seed funding for <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/08\/31\/jabsom-learning-communities\/\">Learning Communities<\/a>, launched in 2020. This innovative curriculum brings students together in small groups to augment their <abbr>MD<\/abbr> curriculum and provides wellness support while preparing them for the realities of a medical career. <\/li>\n<li>Support for the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/hawaiihomeproject\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>H.O.M.E.<\/abbr> Project<\/a>, where <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> students provide hands-on, direct care to thousands of houseless people on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>each year under the guidance of a practicing physician. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;As a very talented and accomplished, pioneering woman in the field of computer science and technology, Virginia clearly had a passion for life-long learning and leading a healthy lifestyle. She particularly enjoyed our Mini-Medical School offerings, and we are so pleased that we were able to reciprocate her generosity with knowledge that she could use herself and share with others,&rdquo; said Buenconsejo-Lum.<\/p>\n<p>At the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Cancer Center, Virginia and Barry Weinman generously hosted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weinmansymposium.com\/\">Weinman Symposium<\/a> for the past 14 years, which they co-founded with <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Cancer Center Researcher Michele Carbone. The symposium has become a premier conference on leading edge cancer research for international experts in science and medicine. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Virginia\u2019s commitment to improving cancer research and care is an honor we hold dearly,&rdquo; said Naoto T.
