Right: <em>Aloha Attire<\/em> Jake Escoto, Jewel Perez, Kekoa Shope (Photo credit: Brad Goda)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Windward Community College\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/conservatory.windward.hawaii.edu\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Conservatory of Performing Arts<\/a> (<abbr>HCPA<\/abbr>) will showcase their production of <em>Kahahawai\/Massie<\/em> and <em>Aloha Attire<\/em>, directed by <strong>Taurie Kinoshita<\/strong> at <a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/campus-life\/arts-entertainment\/paliku-theatre\/\">Palik&#363; Theatre<\/a> from November 10&#8211;19.<\/p>\n<p>Both casts feature the first <a href=\"https:\/\/acmsystem.hawaii.edu\">Academy for Creative Media<\/a> (<abbr>ACM<\/abbr>) cohort of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Conservatory of Performing Arts.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_185067\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-185067\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/windward-hcpa-play-revision-300x169.jpeg\" alt=\"Three actors in their costumes.\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-185067\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/windward-hcpa-play-revision-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/windward-hcpa-play-revision-130x73.jpeg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/windward-hcpa-play-revision.jpeg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-185067\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Kahahawai\/Massie<\/em> from left:  Harrison Terstegge, Claire de Lune, Violette Skilling<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Kahahawai\/Massie<\/em> is an adaptation of Dennis Carroll\u2019s original <em>Massie\/Kahahawai<\/em>, which is based on an infamous criminal court case in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>This docu-drama uses court documents, newspaper articles and witness accounts to recount the series of tragic events in a still segregated early 1930s Honolulu, culminating in the murder of Joseph Kahahawai, a Hawaiian, by four Caucasian people who were subsequently set free after only one hour in the governor&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is a story of race, poverty, a justice system which favors the wealthy&#8212;and the unsung heroes,&rdquo; Kinoshita said. &ldquo;I chose this play to honor Dr. Carroll, using his original play as a starting point. Molina<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Also playing will be <em>Aloha Attire<\/em> by author Lee Cataluna, the <abbr title=\"Hawaii Conservatory of Performing Arts\">HCPA<\/abbr> Established Island Artist for the 2023&#8211;2024 season. First performed online in 2020, it has been revised and adapted for the stage.<\/p>\n<p>The play features two sisters rummaging through their mother&#8217;s old boxes of memories, each item telling a different story of their family.
