{"id":185207,"date":"2023-10-17T12:37:40","date_gmt":"2023-10-17T22:37:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=185207"},"modified":"2023-10-17T12:37:40","modified_gmt":"2023-10-17T22:37:40","slug":"uh-press-filipino-american-journal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/10\/17\/uh-press-filipino-american-journal\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Press publishes Filipino American history journal"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_185209\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-185209\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/system-filipino-journal.jpeg\" alt=\"Filipino american national historical society journal announcement\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-185209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/system-filipino-journal.jpeg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/system-filipino-journal-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/system-filipino-journal-130x73.jpeg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-185209\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Filipino American National Historical Society Journal<\/em>, Volume 11<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In celebration of Filipino American History Month, the <a href=\"https:\/\/uhpress.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Press<\/a> launched the publication of a one-of-a-kind journal devoted exclusively to the identification, gathering, preservation and dissemination of Filipino American history and culture in the <abbr>U.S<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Patricia Espiritu Halagao, a <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Education<\/a> professor at <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and Terese Guinsatao Monberg, an associate professor at Michigan State University, the interdisciplinary peer-reviewed annual, <a href=\"https:\/\/uhpress.hawaii.edu\/title\/fanhs\/\"><em>Filipino American National Historical Society Journal<\/em><\/a> (<abbr>FANHS<\/abbr>), showcases research by community-based and academic historians, as well as personal histories.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I am honored and proud to have worked alongside my home institution press to create a beautiful, engaging and professional journal,&rdquo; said Halagao.&ldquo;It\u2019s fitting that the <abbr>FANHS<\/abbr> Journal is published in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> given that Filipinos make up the largest Asian American ethnic group in the state. I hope new readers will appreciate the depth and diversity of Filipino American history.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Halagao is a part of the journal\u2019s new leadership that spearheaded the publication\u2019s redesign. A new section, &ldquo;Collaborating with Our Ancestors,&rdquo; features tribute pieces and intergenerational conversations between past and present Filipino American academic and activist leaders. In November 2023, the journal will publish Volume 11 alongside its 10-volume archive.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Find all published volumes of <abbr>FANHS<\/abbr>\u2019s archive on <a href=\"https:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/journal\/870\">Project <abbr>MUSE<\/abbr><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The journal is sponsored by the Filipino American National Historical Society, the oldest, existing national Filipino American organization in the <abbr>U.S<\/abbr>. with 43 regional chapters nationwide. In October 1992, the society hosted the first official Filipino American History Month, long before the <abbr>U.S<\/abbr>. Congress recognized the commemorative month in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are so excited to publish the <abbr>FANHS<\/abbr> Journal with the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Press.
