If his appointment is approved by the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Board of Regents  at the November 16 meeting, Yamaguchi\u2019s start date will be January 2, 2024.<\/p>\n\n  --><\/p>\n<p>Chef Roy Yamaguchi will be the next executive director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/culinaryinstitute.hawaii.edu\/timeline\/\">Culinary Institute of the Pacific<\/a> (<abbr>CIP<\/abbr>) at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a>. His appointment was approved by the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Board of Regents at their November 16 meeting. Yamaguchi\u2019s start date is January 2, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Yamaguchi earned an associate in occupational studies degree in culinary arts from the Culinary Institute of America (<abbr>CIA<\/abbr>), served on the <abbr>CIA<\/abbr> board for more than 12 years and is currently a trustee emeritus. He has worked in the culinary and restaurant industry for more than 45 years and has successfully managed more than 40 restaurants worldwide as a founder, chef and owner. He is also one of 12 <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> chefs who founded <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Regional Cuisine in 1991, and in 1993, became he became the first person from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> to receive the James Beard Best Chef Award.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_146562\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-146562\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-shidler-tim-roy-yamaguchi2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"person tending to crops\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-146562\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-shidler-tim-roy-yamaguchi2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-shidler-tim-roy-yamaguchi2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-shidler-tim-roy-yamaguchi2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-146562\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo courtesy: Roy Yamaguchi)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Roy has strong family and business foundations in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and the greater Asia Pacific and understands the unique economic, political, business and cultural environment of our region,&rdquo; <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> Chancellor Misaki Takabayashi said. &ldquo;Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a deep commitment to education by founding and sponsoring scholarship programs and fundraising campaigns that have supported countless students at high schools and colleges here and abroad.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Yamaguchi\u2019s selection to serve as the executive director was based on recommendations from the campus-wide search advisory committee, the executive leadership team and feedback from the public forums with all candidates. The executive director leads the <abbr>CIP<\/abbr> program, including overseeing the credit and non-credit programs, culinary research, food innovation, internships and apprenticeships. The executive director will also develop and implement the new <abbr>CIP<\/abbr> restaurant at Diamond Head&#8212;the crown jewel of the program&#8212;and oversee its operation.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The development of the <abbr>CIP<\/abbr> at Diamond Head promises to take us to the next era of our culinary education, and is possible because of the inspiration, dedication and financial support of many,&rdquo; said Takabayashi.
