Such losses affect communities large and small across our nation.<\/p>\n<p>A team led by a University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Engineering<\/a> professor offers practical research approaches to mitigate these losses in the <em><abbr>NHERI<\/abbr> (Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure) Science Plan, Third Edition<\/em>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Download the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designsafe-ci.org\/data\/browser\/public\/designsafe.storage.published\/PRJ-4240\"><em><abbr>NHERI<\/abbr> Science Plan, Third Edition<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;Research engineers, working across disciplines, can design safer structures and make our communities more resilient,&rdquo; said lead author Ian Robertson, Arthur N.L. Chiu Distinguished Professor in the <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cee.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering<\/a>. &ldquo;In this third edition of the <em><abbr>NHERI<\/abbr> Science Plan<\/em>, we present ways researchers can leverage National Science Foundation (<abbr>NSF<\/abbr>)-funded resources, from centrifuges to cyberinfrastructure&#8212;all to protect our civil infrastructure and our communities.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Guide for natural hazards researchers<\/h2>\n<p>The document outlines the field\u2019s current challenges and key research questions and includes example research campaigns. In addition, the science plan provides details on resources and opportunities for research, including interdisciplinary-team research, using one or more of the 13 <abbr>NHERI<\/abbr> experimental facilities.<\/p>\n<p>The <em><abbr>NHERI<\/abbr> Science Plan, Third Edition<\/em> also serves to inspire and guide early career researchers exploring disaster research in large-scale experimentation, computer modeling and simulation, the social sciences, and novel engineering techniques for mitigating damage from earthquake, wind, fire and coastal hazards.<\/p>\n<h2>New in the third edition<\/h2>\n<p>This third edition of the <abbr>NHERI<\/abbr> Science Plan is expanded to incorporate all <abbr>NSF<\/abbr>-funded <abbr>NHERI<\/abbr> resources, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Details related to computer simulation and modeling using <abbr>NHERI<\/abbr> SimCenter applications<\/li>\n<li>Social science best practices advanced by <abbr>NHERI<\/abbr> CONVERGE<\/li>\n<li>Extreme events reconnaissance and research<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Leveraging insights from the <abbr>NHERI<\/abbr> SimCenter, CONVERGE and extreme event teams, the third edition presents a decidedly interdisciplinary approach to natural hazards research.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We have significantly updated the Key Research Questions,&rdquo; said Robertson. &ldquo;Also, each of our example research campaigns demonstrates strategies and tactics for incorporating the strengths of multiple disciplines to achieve sustainable, equitable research goals.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Another highlight of the third edition is a comprehensive list of extreme events research and reconnaissance teams, <abbr>NSF<\/abbr>-funded groups dedicated to collecting perishable data before, during and after earthquakes, windstorms, tsunamis and other natural hazards.<\/p>\n<p>Sample research campaigns outlined in the science plan include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Understanding and reducing vulnerability of low-income communities to windstorms<\/li>\n<li>Increasing regional resilience to mega seismic events: Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake and tsunami<\/li>\n<li>Cascading and compounding impacts of natural hazards<\/li>\n<li>A community-driven integrated research campaign for hurricanes<\/li>\n<li>Infrastructure impacts of climate change-induced migration<\/li>\n<li>Net-zero building materials and construction<\/li>\n<li>Securing our nation through communication and education<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.designsafe-ci.org\/\"><abbr>NHERI<\/abbr><\/a> is a nationwide, multi-million dollar <abbr>NSF<\/abbr>-funded network dedicated to preventing damage from hazards like earthquakes, tsunamis, wildfires and windstorms.
