(Artwork by: M\u0101h\u016bcha)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa hana keaka (play) written and directed by a recent alumnus of the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/liveonstage\/\">Department of Theatre and Dance<\/a> as part of his <abbr>MFA<\/abbr> degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hanakeaka\/\">Hawaiian Theatre<\/a> captured six national awards from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kennedy-center.org\/education\/opportunities-for-artists\/pre-professional-artist-training\/kcactf\/\">Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival<\/a> (<abbr>KCACTF<\/abbr>). The national theatre program, which incorporates 18,000 students annually from colleges and universities across the country, awarded productions in higher education that promote long-term societal impacts through an artistic lens.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Hawaiian Theatre\u2019s production, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/03\/31\/comedic-play-debut-in-hawaiian-pidgin-and-olelo-mahu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hooilina\">Ho&#699;oilina<\/span><\/a> is written and directed by &#256;kea Kahikina who penned the comedic hana keaka mostly in Hawaiian. The play also features other languages such as Pidgin, English and <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> m&#257;h&#363; (m&#257;h&#363; creole). (Photo credit: Christine Lamborn)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;It is truly an honor to be recognized on the American national level for theatre excellence,&rdquo; Kahikina expressed. &ldquo;The true award, however, is the participation, laughter, tears and leo <span aria-label=\"kakoo\">k&#257;ko&#699;o<\/span> (supportive voices) of our l&#257;hui: our people, our nation. The production performed exclusively in Hawaiian earned recognition for directing, individual performance, and lighting and music. The Hawaiian storytelling genre is flourishing rapidly. In 2014, the Hawaiian Theatre program was formally established at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa by Baker. <span aria-label=\"Laieikawai,\">L&#257;&#699;ieikawai,<\/span> the inaugural hana keaka production she wrote and directed, played to sold out audiences on the Kennedy Theatre mainstage in 2014 before touring to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island, <span aria-label=\"Molokai,\">Moloka&#699;i,<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> and Aotearoa (New Zealand).
