Among the projects included 23 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ics.hawaii.edu\/academics\/capstone-project\/\">capstone<\/a> students working in teams to build 10 software systems for their sponsors (U.S. Army, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Digital Health Lab and more). Students who were part of the CyberSecurity Service Provider Internship Program showcased their work, as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/11\/28\/hawaii-annual-code-challenge-2023\/\">three winning teams from the 2023 <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Annual Code Challenge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We love to show off our students&#8217; work. This is the culmination of their experience with the <abbr>ICS<\/abbr> department,&rdquo; said Department Chair and Professor Scott Robertson. &ldquo;I think it shows outreach, that they are working with the Department of Defense, with other companies, and there are many possibilities for them as they move forward.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Solving real world problems<\/h2>\n<p>One project by students Mahie Crabbe, Christine Nakano, Kristine Rivera and Taryn Takebayashi helped the Army Reserve create a centralized talent marketplace to efficiently advertise critical job vacancies. They worked with <abbr title=\"Lieutenant\">Lt<\/abbr>. <abbr title=\"Colonel\">Col<\/abbr>. Mark Lee, 9th Mission Support Command talent manager, and created a web application featuring a secure login, role-based access and databases for users, job vacancies and resum&#233;s.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I believe it was a great experience for our whole team,&rdquo; Takebayashi said. &ldquo;We learned a lot of different technologies that we utilized to put together this project.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;My interaction with students has been phenomenal. This is our first semester that we\u2019ve had interns as part of our h\u0101nai program,&rdquo; Lee said. &ldquo;We are very pleased to have two teams that are presenting their problem sets. It was very nice to be able to have a positive experience working with the students helping to solve real world problems in the Army Reserve.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Possible future opportunities<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/manoa-ics-project-day-wide-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people looking at posters\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-188341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/manoa-ics-project-day-wide-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/manoa-ics-project-day-wide-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/manoa-ics-project-day-wide.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Greg Hester is the chief technology officer for software technology company Ulu HI-Tech, which does a variety of work including running the HOLO Card program for the City and County of Honolulu. He is also president of <abbr title=\"Chief Information Officer\">CIO<\/abbr> Council of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>. One of the goals of the council is to improve the IT workforce in the state.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I\u2019ve definitely been inspired today and I\u2019ve also made some connections that I think I can leverage for what we\u2019re doing in the <abbr>CIO<\/abbr> Council, and also maybe push for internships for some of those students,&rdquo; Hester said.<\/p>\n<h2>Showcase student-led groups<\/h2>\n<p>At the <abbr>ICS<\/abbr> project day, representatives from <abbr>ICS<\/abbr>-affiliated <a href=\"https:\/\/acmmanoa.org\/\">student clubs<\/a> were also present to showcase their work.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;All software engineers know that to get a job you have to practice technical interview questions, basically they want to see if you have the technical skills to do the job. Those can be very rigorous,&rdquo; said Alyssia Chen, <abbr>ICS<\/abbr> graduate student and <abbr>PANDA<\/abbr> (Programming and Algorithms) organization president. &ldquo;At <abbr>PANDA<\/abbr>, we help students prepare for them.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Roma Malasarte, junior computer science major, is part of <abbr>SWITCH<\/abbr> (Supporting Women in Information Technology Computing <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We encourage students to join our club so that we can support women in tech,&rdquo; Malasarte said.<\/p>\n<p>For a list of the <abbr>ICS<\/abbr> student organizations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ics.hawaii.edu\/community\/student-organizations\/\">visit this website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The event concluded with special awards: best poster presentation, certificates of recognition to the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Annual Code Challenge winners and certificates of recognition to student club members.
