This annual tribute, established in 2013 through Act 28 signed by Gov. Credit: Kanaeokana<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In celebration, the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Hawai&#699;inui&#257;kea<\/span> School for Hawaiian Knowledge<\/a> (<abbr>HSHK<\/abbr>) at <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa is collaborating on <em>Ola Ka <span aria-label=\"I\">&#699;&#298;<\/span><\/em> (Hawaiian language thrives), a series of free community events on <span aria-label=\"Kauai,\">Kaua&#699;i,<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and Maui. These events promote <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> or Hawaiian language through music, games and entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;A foundational principle for <span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Hawai&#699;inui&#257;kea<\/span> is our ongoing commitment to the revitalization and renormalization of our language, identity and ancestral knowledge,&rdquo; said Malia Nobrega-Olivera, director of strategic partnerships at <span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Hawai&#699;inui&#257;kea<\/span>. &ldquo;The <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"noeau\">no&#699;eau<\/span> (proverb) that guides our work is found in Ka Puuhonua o na Hawaii\u2026and it says, <em><span aria-label=\"ike\">&#699;ike<\/span> <span aria-label=\"ia\">&#699;ia<\/span> ke kanaka ma k&#257;na <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span><\/em> (a person is seen, understood, recognized through their language).&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191478\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-191478\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/mahina-olelo-scavenger-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Child playing the scavenger hunt\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-191478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/mahina-olelo-scavenger-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/mahina-olelo-scavenger-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/mahina-olelo-scavenger-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-191478\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Ola Ka <span aria-label=\"I\">&#699;&#298;<\/span><\/em> features activities for the entire <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span> (family). Credit: Kanaeokana<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><abbr>HSHK<\/abbr> has been a key organizer of <em>Ola Ka <span aria-label=\"I\">&#699;&#298;<\/span><\/em> since its launch in 2020, with <span aria-label=\"Ahahui\">&#699;Ahahui<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Olelo\">&#699;&#332;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and Kanaeokana as co-sponsors. The 1978 amendment to the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Constitution recognized <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> as one of the State\u2019s official languages. Nobrega-Olivera highlights that learning the Hawaiian language extends beyond linguistic acquisition; it delves into understanding a culture, its people, the land and more.<\/p>\n<p>One of the notable features at <em> Ola Ka <span aria-label=\"I\">&#699;&#298;<\/span><\/em> events is the <span aria-label=\"Hookuku\">Ho&#699;ok&#363;k&#363;<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hai\">Ha&#699;i<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Olelo\">&#699;&#332;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, a Hawaiian language speech contest.
