{"id":192261,"date":"2024-02-20T16:43:50","date_gmt":"2024-02-21T02:43:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=192261"},"modified":"2025-06-23T10:25:53","modified_gmt":"2025-06-23T20:25:53","slug":"holistic-climate-solutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/02\/20\/holistic-climate-solutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Researcher points to holistic climate solutions at global conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap-post\"><figure class=\"wp-block-embed wp-block-embed-youtube is-type-video is-provider-youtube epyt-figure\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><div class=\"epyt-video-wrapper\"><iframe  id=\"_ytid_81010\"  width=\"620\" height=\"349\"  data-origwidth=\"620\" data-origheight=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0UgN6U-8CHU?enablejsapi=1&origin=https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu&rel=0&autoplay=0&cc_load_policy=0&cc_lang_pref=&iv_load_policy=1&loop=0&fs=1&playsinline=0&autohide=2&theme=dark&color=red&controls=1&disablekb=0&\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  no-lazyload\" title=\"Cultivating Climate Smart Agriculture in Hawai\u2018i: Hawai\u2018i Partnership for Climate Smart Commodities\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/figure><\/div>\n<p><em><strong>Editor&#8217;s note<\/strong>: The federal government withdrew grant funding for this research in 2025.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> M\u0101noa professor Susan Crow, who is leading a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/10\/04\/uh-leads-climate-smart-food-production-grant\/\">$40-million U.S. Department of Agriculture (<abbr>USDA<\/abbr>) grant<\/a> to assist <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> farmers, ranchers and foresters in implementing sustainable and climate-smart practices was an invited speaker at the annual American Geophysical Union (<abbr>AGU<\/abbr>) in December 2023, which hosts more than 25,000 attendees.<\/p>\n<p>Crow presented &ldquo;Overcoming barriers to implementation through a holistic framework for characterizing place-based suites of practices that achieve meaningful climate benefits,&rdquo; and <abbr>AGU<\/abbr> produced a video of her research that was shown at the conference.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-ctahr-climate-smart-commodities-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Person watering crops\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-192309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-ctahr-climate-smart-commodities-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-ctahr-climate-smart-commodities-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-ctahr-climate-smart-commodities.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The climate-smart agriculture session highlighted research around the world tracking holistic impacts of innovative practices on climate and communities and really showcased the intersection of basic research and solutions-oriented approaches,&rdquo; said Crow, a professor with the UH M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a>. &ldquo;I was honored to be an invited speaker and open the session.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The conference connected researchers, students and community members from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> with the greater scientific community to network and share our views with others.<\/p>\n<p>Crow and her team created the <a href=\"https:\/\/climatesmarthawaii.org\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Partnership for Climate Smart Commodities<\/a> to develop equitable practices, data systems and decision support tools to promote and actuate meaningful climate benefits in agroecosystems guided by <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>-based producers and ancestral practitioners.
