The decommissioning includes the removal of the observatory building, generator building and telecommunications and electrical infrastructure and the restoration of the site that is consistent with the area.<\/p>\n<p>H\u014dk\u016b <span aria-label=\"Kea\">Ke&#699;a<\/span> is the second telescope on Maunakea in the final phase of the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/maunakea\/library\/reference.php?view=919\">extensive decommissioning process<\/a> required under the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/maunakea\/stewardship\/management-plans-and-updates#cmp\">Mauna Kea Comprehensive Management Plan<\/a> (<abbr>CMP<\/abbr>). The deconstruction and site restoration of the California Institute of Technology Submillimeter Observatory (<abbr>CSO<\/abbr>) is scheduled to be completed by fall of 2024.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are diligently following the steps outlined in the <abbr>CMP<\/abbr> and the very detailed decommissioning subplan and are very pleased to be in the final stages,&rdquo; said Greg Chun, director of <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo Center for Maunakea Stewardship (<abbr>CMS<\/abbr>). &ldquo;We are approaching this process with the utmost respect for this precious wahi pana and remain committed to transparency, environmental responsibility and the preservation of our revered mauna.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The construction crews working on the project will go through cultural training, mandated by the <abbr>CMP<\/abbr>, that covers Maunakea&#8217;s history and cultural significance. Daily prayers and Native Hawaiian protocol will precede all work during the deconstruction and site restoration phases.<\/p>\n<h2>H\u014dk\u016b <span aria-label=\"Kea\">Ke&#699;a<\/span> observatory<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Hoku_Kea_telescope-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Hoku Kea telescope\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-175913\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Hoku_Kea_telescope-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Hoku_Kea_telescope-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Hoku_Kea_telescope.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Located on the southeastern side of the 528-acre astronomy precinct on the summit, the H\u014dk\u016b <span aria-label=\"Kea\">Ke&#699;a<\/span> site was built by the U.S. Air Force in 1968 and was one of the first observatories on Maunakea before it was given to <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> in 1970. The observatory was transferred to <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo in 2003 and became an important educational facility for astronomy students. In April 2023, the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Board of Land and Natural Resources approved the Conservation District Use Application submitted by <abbr>CMS<\/abbr> for the decommissioning of H\u014dk\u016b <span aria-label=\"Kea\">Ke&#699;a<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>A final environmental assessment in June 2022 found that the project will have no significant adverse environmental impacts.
