A new bi-weekly podcast has set sail to showcase the voices of Oceania\u2019s people, artists and scholars. Launched this spring from the University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> at M\u0101noa\u2019s Center for Pacific Islands Studies<\/a> (CPIS<\/abbr>), the debut episode of Oceania Currents<\/em><\/a>, aired on February 27 and attracted hundreds of listeners.<\/p>\n

The new podcast is recorded in cutting-edge facilities at 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s Center for Language & Technology<\/a> and hosted by CPIS<\/abbr> Associate Professor Tarcisius “Tara” Kabutaulaka and Kenji Cataldo, a graduate assistant at CPIS<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n

“I hope listeners will learn more about Oceania, Pacific Island cultures, about the issues that are important to Pacific Islanders, and the challenges and opportunities they face in the 21st century,” said Kabutaulaka. “It is also about understanding and learning from the past in order to ‘way find’ into the future.”<\/p>\n

The premiere episode featured interviews with past and present CPIS<\/abbr> faculty, including CPIS<\/abbr> Director Alexander Mawyer, Emeritus Professor Terence Wesley-Smith and Professor Katerina Teaiwa, a CPIS<\/abbr> alumna now teaching at the Australian National University. Each discussed the significance of the Pacific Islands studies department which is centered around encompassing a deeper understanding of Oceania, a region consisting of Australasia, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia.<\/p>\n
