Maribeth Ganiron, who graduated in 2019 with an associate in science degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/culn\">culinary arts<\/a>, impressed judges with her finesse and innovative dishes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_195618\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-195618\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/uh-leeward-butter-poached.jpg\" alt=\"poached sea bass with sauce drizzled on top\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-195618\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/uh-leeward-butter-poached.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/uh-leeward-butter-poached-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-195618\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Butter Poached Sea Bass<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Five young chefs showcased their skills for the 2024 <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\/Pacific Islands Province title.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Her winning dishes included:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Appetizer: Butter Poached Sea Bass with Brown-Butter Cream Sauce, Gnocchi, Tomato Salsa &#38; Basil Oil<\/li>\n<li>Entr\u00e9e: Seared Venison Tenderloin with Red Wine Demi Sauce, Herb Roasted Fingerling Potatoes &#38; Haricot Verts<\/li>\n<li>Dessert: Brandy Flambe Apple Tart with Lemon Pastry Cream &#38; Cinnamon-Salted Caramel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ganiron finished second in the same competition last year. Encouraged by her mentor, Chef Eric Leterc of The Pacific Club, she decided to compete and demonstrate her growth.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_195608\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-195608\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-\ncontent\/uploads\/2024\/04\/uh-leeward-seared-venison.jpg\" alt=\"two slices of venison tenderloins with assorted vegetables\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-195608\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/uh-leeward-seared-venison.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/uh-leeward-seared-venison-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-195608\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Seared Venison Tenderloin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She credits Leeward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr>, particularly the Contemporary Cuisine class and Chef and Assistant Professor Matt Egami&#8217;s guidance, with honing her skills.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The one class that I believed prepared me for this competition was Contemporary Cuisine.
