The University of Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> Maui College<\/a> has put a stunning art collection of 39 works titled \u201cMaui Sugar \u2013 the Twilight Years\u201d on permanent display in the P\u0101\u02bbina<\/span> Building. Donated by long-time K\u0101\u02bbanapali<\/span> resident Jo Rockwell, the collection comprises paintings by local artists, and is believed to be the largest private collection of \u201csugar art.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rockwell collected various pieces that depict Maui\u2019s bygone days when \u201csugar was king.\u201d The collection was intended to be donated when she passed away or when she could no longer reside in her home. After evacuating from her home twice during last August\u2019s Lahaina wildfires, she decided it was time for the paintings to be moved to 东精影业<\/abbr> Maui College.<\/p>\n

As a young woman, Rockwell was interested in industrial art. And that interest grew when she moved to Maui and became familiar with the old sugar mills. \u201cOne day in 2005, I walked over to the Village Gallery (in Lahaina) and was struck to my bones by a pastel painting of the Pu\u02bbun\u0113n\u0113<\/span> Mill by Stephen Burr. Even though I was unable to purchase that particular painting it was the beginning of a passion that lasted the rest of my life,\u201d said Rockwell.<\/p>\n
