National Endowment for the Humanities Chair Shelly C. Lowe (Navajo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

A visit to the University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> at M\u0101noa from the National Endowment for the Humanities<\/a> (NEH<\/abbr>) strengthened the connection between the two institutions, and potentially helped to spark additional support and resources to 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa in the field of humanities.<\/p>\n

The 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Scholarship<\/a> hosted the NEH<\/abbr> delegation from Washington, D.C. NEH<\/abbr> is an independent federal agency dedicated to supporting research, education, preservation and public programs in the humanities. The delegation was led by NEH<\/abbr> Chair Shelly C. Lowe (Navajo), NEH<\/abbr> Senior Deputy Chair Anthony Mitchell and NEH<\/abbr> Chief of Staff Kelsey Coates.<\/p>\n

The visit on April 25 began with a meeting with College of Arts, Languages & Letters<\/a> Dean Peter Arnade to discuss 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s strength in humanities, highlight the work of 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s faculty and students, and learn about NEH<\/abbr>\u2019s mission and strategic goals. Arnade previously received NEH<\/abbr> funding, which helped change the course of his career.<\/p>\n

“The visit from NEH<\/abbr> Chair Lowe underscored the breadth of talent among our faculty in the
\nHumanities and our unique scholarly attributes,” Arnade said. “It placed a spotlight on the excellence of our faculty\u2019s research and opened the door to more NEH<\/abbr> funding opportunities.”<\/p>\n

The NEH<\/abbr> delegation also met with 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa faculty who received NEH<\/abbr> funding, and learned about the lasting impact of their projects.<\/p>\n

They toured the Hawaiian and Pacific collections<\/a>, housed in 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s Hamilton Library. The delegation conducted a faculty forum for 东精影业<\/abbr> faculty, staff and students, and representatives from the Hawaii Council for the Humanities. They were treated to a poetry reading by Associate Professor Brandy N\u0101lani McDougall, who is the Hawaiʻi<\/span> state poet laureate<\/a>. Lowe then showcased NEH<\/abbr>\u2019s work to increase access to the humanities for every American across the nation. Finally, the group received tours of the John Young Museum of Art<\/a> and the Center for Oral History<\/a>.<\/p>\n
