University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa researchers are exploring ways to establish an Indigenous limu commercial industry in the islands using the second of two &#36;150,000 Sun Grant Western Region awards granted to Samir Khanal of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although the limu is currently &ldquo;unexplored&rdquo; as an algal feedstock, Khanal of the <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/MBBE\">Department of Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering<\/a> believes it could potentially launch a significant commercial industry&#8212;if researchers could figure out a way to boost its growth rate.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_200101\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-200101\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-ctahr-biorefinery-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"man holding seaweed\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-200101\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-ctahr-biorefinery-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-ctahr-biorefinery-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-ctahr-biorefinery.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-200101\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> graduate student Ty Shitanaka displays a clump of <em>Dictyota sp.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;If we can develop a biorefinery, focused on this Indigenous Hawaiian seaweed, to produce high-value compounds while simultaneously remediating aquaculture effluent [waste], this will introduce sustainable macroalgal-based bioproducts to the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> marketplace and create new avenues for a circular bioeconomy in the state,&rdquo; said Khanal.<\/p>\n<h2>Creating a biorefinery<\/h2>\n<p>Khanal and his team of researchers including Surendra KC, Manpreet Kaur and graduate student Ty Shitanaka are using CO2-nanobubbles and aquaculture waste as a nutrient source.<\/p>\n<p>The team\u2019s approach includes lab-scale experiments to optimize growth conditions, followed by pilot-scale cultivation trials.
