All site work for the decommissioning of the <a href=\"http:\/\/cso.caltech.edu\/cso.html\">Caltech Submillimeter Observatory<\/a> (<abbr>CSO<\/abbr>)was completed in June 2024 following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/06\/02\/maunakea-1st-telescope-decommissioning-complete\/\">removal and site restoration of the <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo H\u014dk\u016b <span aria-label=\"Kea\">Ke&#699;a<\/span> Observatory<\/a> in May 2024.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ukRyjvZbNeM\">See a timelapse of the removal<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;The completion of the two decommissioning projects demonstrates our commitment to responsible stewardship of Maunakea,&rdquo; said <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo Chancellor Bonnie D. Irwin &ldquo;We remain devoted to our role as stewards of the Mauna, respecting its profound cultural and environmental significance.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/maunakea\/\">Center for Maunakea Stewardship<\/a> (<abbr>CMS<\/abbr>) oversaw both decommissioning projects. I want to commend the team for their commitment to problem solving and completing this project in a way that was pono.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The deconstruction phase of <abbr>CSO<\/abbr> began in August 2022 and included the removal and transport of the telescope, physical deconstruction of the building housing the telescope and site restoration. As with the H\u014dk\u016b <span aria-label=\"Kea\">Ke&#699;a<\/span> Observatory, the project was completed in accordance with the decommissioning process required by the Mauna Kea Comprehensive Management Plan.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The physical decommissioning was undertaken with great care by our prime deconstruction contractor, with constant oversight by local cultural, archeological, environmental, and construction monitors as well as the <abbr>CMS<\/abbr>,&rdquo; said Caltech physics professor and <abbr>CSO<\/abbr> Director Sunil Golwala.<\/p>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> State Legislature established the Maunakea Stewardship and Oversight Authority (<abbr>MKSOA<\/abbr>) in 2022.
