(Photo credit: Sara Saastamoinen)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/academy-for-hawaii-intelligence-studies-summer-program\/\">Academy for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Intelligence Studies Summer Program<\/a> (<abbr>AHI-SP<\/abbr>) at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a> (<abbr>CSS<\/abbr>) celebrated the graduation of its Class of 2024 on July 26. (Photo credit: Sara Saastamoinen)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>AHI-SP<\/abbr> is more than a summer program,&rdquo; said Jairus Grove, <abbr>AHI-SP<\/abbr> program director and <a href=\"https:\/\/politicalscience.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">political science<\/a> chair and professor. &ldquo;It offers high school students statewide an unparalleled educational experience and a workforce pathway to career success in the growing field of national intelligence.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Held July 5&#8211;27, 2024, <abbr>AHI-SP<\/abbr> provided a comprehensive curriculum developed by the Department of Political Science. The program included a three-week online component (July 5&#8211;20) followed by an immersive in-person residence week on the <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa campus (July 21&#8211;27). The program not only enhances students\u2019 academic credentials, but also provides valuable insights and hands-on experiences directly applicable to future careers.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>One <abbr>AHI-SP<\/abbr> participant was Cash McCloud, a 17-year-old from Lahaina who lost his home in the Maui wildfires last year and relocated to Kailua two months ago.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;When I heard about the <abbr>AHI<\/abbr> program, I immediately knew it would be the perfect opportunity for me,&rdquo; said McCloud, who will be a rising senior at Kalaheo High in the fall. &ldquo;Political philosophy is my greatest passion, and being able to explore these complex topics&#8212;so related to what I hope to define my future with&#8212;was exciting.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_201215\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-201215\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-pols-ahi-program-guillen-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"person headshot\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-201215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-pols-ahi-program-guillen-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-pols-ahi-program-guillen-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-pols-ahi-program-guillen.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-201215\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Trinity Guillen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Added <abbr>AHI-SP<\/abbr> participant Trinity Guillen, a 17-year-old rising senior at <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s <span aria-label=\"Kapaa\">Kapa&#699;a<\/span> High, &ldquo;I really liked this program, because it gave me a better sense of what I want to do for a career. I\u2019m interested in chemical engineering, and perhaps later pharmaceutical engineering, and was especially fascinated by the topic of nuclear warfare. So watching the (1983) movie <em>WarGames<\/em> as a group was super interesting.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>AHI-SP<\/abbr> Class of 2024 included high school students from <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, Maui, <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island, with 60&#37; coming from neighbor islands.
