The team introduced a small amount of fluorescein dye, which glows bright green under sunlight, into a local residence\u2019s sewage disposal system. This test was designed to track whether the dye would reach the shoreline and, if so, how quickly.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related <em><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> News<\/em> story:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/08\/12\/rising-risk-of-infection-hilo-bay-climate-change\/\">Rising public risk of infection at Hilo Bay linked to climate change<\/a>, August 12, 2024<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;Sure enough, the dye emerged at a shoreline spring, telling us that the wastewater from at least one home, and possibly more, is flowing out into <span aria-label=\"Kahaluu\">Kahalu&#699;u<\/span> Bay,&rdquo; said Steve Colbert, a <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/depts\/marinescience\/\">marine science<\/a> professor who is leading the study.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Kahaluu\">Kahalu&#699;u<\/span> Bay is home to a unique coral reef ecosystem and is also one of the state\u2019s most popular snorkeling locations. According to the County of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, more than 400,000 people visit the shallow, nearshore reef each year to view its diverse marine life, colorful fish and coral colonies.<\/p>\n<h2>Faster flow rate<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_202132\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-202132\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/hilo-water-quality-students-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Four people smiling on the rocky shore with a rainbow in the background\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-202132\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/hilo-water-quality-students-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/hilo-water-quality-students-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/hilo-water-quality-students.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-202132\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left: Student researchers Ihilani Kamau, Amber Skiwo, Katie Cartee and Professor Steve Colbert<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo researchers said what surprised them the most during the testing was how fast the groundwater was carrying sewage to the shoreline.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We measured groundwater flow rates of 304 yards per day,&rdquo; said Colbert. &ldquo;So for homes with cesspools near <span aria-label=\"Alii\">Ali&#699;i<\/span> Drive, sewage can reach the shoreline in less than six hours.
