As a recent recipient of the highly competitive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegatesscholarship.org\/\">Gates Scholarship<\/a>\u2014funded by the Bill &#38; Melinda Gates Foundation to support outstanding minority students from low-income backgrounds\u2014Farias will have her entire cost of attendance covered as she pursues her bachelor&#8217;s degree.<\/p>\n<p>Hailing from the Yakima Tribal Reservation in Washington, her choice to attend <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa was inspired by her academic aspirations and desire to be part of a close-knit community. Farias grew up in the small town of Wapato, which is known for its agricultural roots and enriched by the multicultural heritage of Native Americans, Hispanics and Filipinos. She was part of a supportive community that fostered appreciation for diverse cultures.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-farias-vert-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"farias taking a self photo\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-202482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-farias-vert-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-farias-vert-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-farias-vert.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The range of academic options and extracurricular activities at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa reminded me of home,&rdquo; Farias said. &ldquo;The community service clubs and the vibrant campus life resonated with my values and interests.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>During high school, Farias excelled academically and was active in sports, such as wrestling, cross country and track, and was involved in her school\u2019s associated student body. She was crowned Miss Wapato 2023\u20132024, a role that involved community service, fundraising for the Seattle Children\u2019s Hospital, and representing her town. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Being Miss Wapato was an honor,&rdquo; Farias said. &ldquo;Growing up as an Afro Latina in a town where it wasn\u2019t common, it was easy to stand out. But my abuelito (grandfather), who was the mayor of our town, always taught me to give back to the community. This accomplishment was for him, my family and myself.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>For Faris, The Gates Scholarship is more than just financial support. &ldquo;It\u2019s an amazing program,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;For me and many others, it\u2019s a chance to achieve our dreams and prepare for a successful future. It\u2019s a gift of education that helps us become inspiring and well-organized adults.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Future nurse aims big<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_202483\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-202483\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-farias-j-sign-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Jaelynn Farias next to uh manoa entrance sign\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-202483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-farias-j-sign-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-farias-j-sign-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-farias-j-sign.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-202483\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Farias is excited to begin her journey at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Farias aspires to major in <a href=\"http:\/\/nursing.hawaii.edu\">nursing<\/a>, a field that captured her interest during high school. &ldquo;The first science class I took was in biomedical science, which introduced me to the wonders of the human body and the medical community,&rdquo; she recalled. &ldquo;From that moment, I was hooked. Becoming a traveling nurse, specifically in oncology, would allow me to combine my love for science, helping people, and exploring new places.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>She aims to make the best of her college experience. &ldquo;I hope to study abroad, involve myself in community service clubs, take on new challenges, and find a job that aligns with my passions,&rdquo; Farias said.<\/p>\n<p>Having visited <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> during her sophomore year with her godmother, Farias is thrilled about returning to the islands.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> reminds me of home yet offers a new perspective,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;I\u2019m excited about the vibrant culture and the chance to immerse myself in a new community.
