Landslides were also reported near the Maunakea Observatories. <abbr>CMS<\/abbr> crews equipped with road repair equipment are filling and repairing the area to address the damage.<\/p>\n<p>The Visitor Information Station (<abbr>VIS<\/abbr>) located in the mountain\u2019s mid-level elevation is open to visitors.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We commend our dedicated rangers and staff, who are committed to overseeing Maunakea and safeguarding visitors,&rdquo; said Nahua Guilloz, director of stewardship at <abbr>CMS<\/abbr>. &ldquo;Our teams are working diligently to reopen the roads safely and as quickly as possible.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Rangers assist stranded visitors<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_202595\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-202595\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/hilo-maunakea-hone-damage-4-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"damager Mauna road\" width=\"200\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-202595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/hilo-maunakea-hone-damage-4-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/hilo-maunakea-hone-damage-4-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/hilo-maunakea-hone-damage-4.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-202595\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Erosion severely damaged sections of the access road.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Maunakea rangers assisted 17 visitors stranded about 4 miles below the Visitor Information Station after a large tree blocked their departure on August 24. The rangers transported the group to the <abbr>VIS<\/abbr>, where they were provided with shelter and refreshments while Department of Transportation crews cleared the road.<\/p>\n<p>Updates on repairs and the road closure will be provided as more information becomes available.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo Center for Maunakea Stewardship jointly manages Maunakea with the Maunakea Stewardship and Oversight Authority.
