University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> faculty have integrated Indigenous knowledge and ethics with advanced archival practices. They were able to showcase how they have used those aspects along with others at the Society of American Archivists (SAA<\/abbr>) Annual Conference in Chicago in August.<\/p>\n

The SAA<\/abbr> is North America\u2019s oldest and largest professional association for archives and archivists. Manulani Aluli Meyer, associate specialist and Konohiki for K\u016blana o Kapolei (A Hawaiian Place of Learning at 东精影业<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span>)<\/a>, was the keynote speaker, invited by Helen Wong Smith, archivist for University Records at the 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Library<\/a> and the first SAA<\/abbr> president from Hawaiʻi<\/span>. The conference emphasized collaboration and introspection, themes central to both Meyer\u2019s keynote, “Collaboration and Introspection: (K)new Ethics in our Collective Work,” and Wong Smith\u2019s presidential address.<\/p>\n

Their messages resonated with many in the audience of more than 1,200 participants who gave both speakers a standing ovation. <\/p>\n

During her keynote, Meyer explored the principles of hoʻoponopono<\/span> (to correct), focusing on concepts like K\u016bkulkumuhana\u2014pooling energy for a shared purpose\u2014and the many layers of truth, from ho\u02bbopono to ʻOia<\/span> iʻo<\/span> (truth that heals). Her insights into Mihi (forgiveness), Hihia (understanding energy), and the difference between Hoʻolohe<\/span> (listening) and Hoʻolono<\/span> (hearing) were particularly impactful. <\/p>\n

Wong Smith\u2019s preceding presidential address complemented Meyer\u2019s themes, extolling the Hawaiian proverbs “Aʻohe<\/span> pau ka ʻike<\/span> i ka hālau hoʻokahi<\/span>” (all knowledge is not taught in the same school) and “Pūpūkāhi i holomua” (unite to progress). She credited 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Art Archivist Malia Van Heukelem for her contributions, particularly the images of the Meyer family in the Jean Charlot Collection shown during Meyer\u2019s keynote introduction.<\/p>\n

The 东精影业<\/abbr> delegation was well-represented at the conference. Dawn Sueoka from Hamilton Library participated in two panels on political narratives and community engagement in building digital archives. Leilani Dawson discussed 东精影业<\/abbr>\u2019s ArchivesSpace upgrade, and Library Information Science student Ani Kawada presented a poster titled “Inheriting a Legacy: The Moʻokūʻauhau<\/span> and Moʻolelo<\/span> of Nā Hawaiʻi<\/span> ʻImi<\/span> Loa.” They were joined by Sidney Louie from P\u0101lama Settlement.<\/p>\n

“This is likely one of the strongest representations of 东精影业<\/abbr> at the SAA<\/abbr> conference and by introducing Hawaiian knowledge principles especially through Manu\u02bbs eloquent keynote, many who have cited it as the finest, reflects the influence we can have on relationships to broaden the historical record,” said Wong Smith.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
