  {"id":204624,"date":"2024-10-02T15:21:08","date_gmt":"2024-10-03T01:21:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=204624"},"modified":"2024-10-02T15:21:08","modified_gmt":"2024-10-03T01:21:08","slug":"weaving-elementary-stem-ed-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/10\/02\/weaving-elementary-stem-ed-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Weaving elementary <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> ed, culture aim of $643<abbr>K<\/abbr> grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_204625\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-204625\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/manoa-education-mawyer-grant.jpg\" alt=\"two headshots side by side\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-204625\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/manoa-education-mawyer-grant.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/manoa-education-mawyer-grant-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/manoa-education-mawyer-grant-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-204625\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kirsten Mawyer and Joanna Philippoff<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Rural science teachers can now integrate local elements to make the learning experience more engaging and meaningful for their elementary school students thanks to a $643,359 grant from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/\">National Science Foundation<\/a> (<abbr>NSF<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>Associate Professor of Secondary Science Kirsten Mawyer, of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Education<\/a> (<abbr>COE<\/abbr>) School of Teacher Education (<abbr>STE<\/abbr>), and co-director and Associate Specialist of Science Education Joanna Philippoff, will oversee the project over the next four years.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I am excited that this project will support in-service teachers and administrators across <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> to continue the work of centering culturally grounded understandings of place in science education,&rdquo; Mawyer said. &ldquo;I believe that this project\u2019s emphasis on culturally sustaining and revitalizing approaches can make a transformative contribution to critical and cultural ambitious science teaching and learning.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Prioritizing community and culture<\/h2>\n<p>The project investigates how educators and administrators can draw upon professional learning experiences to promote in-school shifts in science teaching and learning, taking into account the unique and diverse contexts of non-urban schools across <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.
