Koy Yoshizumi and Marques Batoon, are among only four students in the country to receive the highly regarded scholarship this year, and began their yearlong studies in Japan this October.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_205096\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-205096\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/manoa-call-mext-yoshizumi-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"family in front of red sign\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-205096\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/manoa-call-mext-yoshizumi-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/manoa-call-mext-yoshizumi-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/manoa-call-mext-yoshizumi.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-205096\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Koy Yoshizumi\u2019s parents Pauline and Darin visiting in Tokyo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;I feel truly blessed to receive this scholarship,&rdquo; said Yoshizumi, who is taking classes at Keio University in Tokyo. &ldquo;I want to take every opportunity that comes my way, and I guess I want to &lsquo;put myself out there&rsquo; a little more.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Yoshizumi, who grew up in Kapolei, first became interested in Japanese culture through anime, a passion that has fueled his academic journey.<\/p>\n<p>Batoon, a double major in Japanese and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ics.hawaii.edu\/\">information and computer sciences<\/a>, is studying at Doshisha University in Kyoto. His year abroad offers him the chance to work on a unique project.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_205094\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-205094\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/manoa-call-mext-batoon-2.jpg\" alt=\"people sitting down eating lunch\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-205094\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/manoa-call-mext-batoon-2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/manoa-call-mext-batoon-2-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-205094\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marques Batoon (center) eating with classmates in Kyoto.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;One of my goals is to complete my Japanese language study app game and play it with the classmates here who are also studying Japanese,&rdquo; Batoon said.<\/p>\n<p>His fascination with the language began in the fourth grade when his best friend, moved to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> from Japan and spoke English and Japanese.<\/p>\n<p>Both Yoshizumi and Batoon represent the thriving <a href=\"https:\/\/eall.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures<\/a> (<abbr>EALL<\/abbr>) department at <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, the largest of its kind in the nation, offering courses in Japanese, Chinese and Korean.
