This information facilitates the ability of public health leaders and emergency managers to make informed decisions during an emergency. <abbr>CASPER<\/abbr> can also be used in non-emergency situations.  <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_205336\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-205336\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/manoa-henderson-alden-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Alden Henderson\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-205336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/manoa-henderson-alden-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/manoa-henderson-alden-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/manoa-henderson-alden.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-205336\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alden Henderson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Alden Henderson, a member of the Catalyst Lab team and a <abbr>HDOH<\/abbr> epidemiologist, helped to develop the <abbr>CASPER<\/abbr><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4630127\/\"> methodology<\/a> during his career at the <abbr>CDC<\/abbr>. He also helped to teach this method in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5635332\/\">Pacific<\/a> and all around the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29559022\/\">world<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The value of a <abbr>CASPER<\/abbr> lies in its ability to deploy teams of public health staff to disaster-affected areas, gathering critical data directly from residents regarding their needs for food, shelter and healthcare,&rdquo; Henderson said. &ldquo;This assessment helps policymakers with near real-time information and make decisions regarding efficient allocation of resources to promptly address the most urgent requirements of affected communities. I&#8217;ve conducted <abbr>CASPER<\/abbr>s that led to providing food and medical care for residents and ensured that shelters remain accessible and open for those in need.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>KDHO<\/abbr> has utilized <abbr>CASPER<\/abbr> to assess the preparedness level of <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> communities by conducting assessments every year from 2017\u201324 (excluding 2021).
